More than 46,000 drug offenders will be eligible for early release from federal prison under an amendment to sentencing guidelines passed on Friday by a U.S. judiciary agency - unless Congress blocks the change.

From the article:

"At the state level, including such conservative places as Texas and South Carolina, sentences for drug offenders have been cut to address overcrowding in prisons and stretched budgets."

"Research from the Pew Charitable Trusts shows that reductions in those states' prison populations have had no effect on public safety."

I find that very hard to believe.

There has ALWAYS been a significant correlation between criminal behavior and the use of drugs and alcohol.

Shouldn’t they be doing what Congress says and not acting on their own?

The ‘RATS need to quickly get more felons out on the streets if they are going to have a chance in 2014.

I probably don’t have a problem with most of this.

Wait until these drug pushers hit the streets only to find out that Barry’s Gangbanger Kids have taken over their “turf”. This could get ugly. Pass the popcorn.

people don’t go to federal prison for minor drug use

they end up in federal prison because their activities have wreaked harm and loss on a considerable number of other people, often through co-offenses such as dealing, pimping, robbery, burglary, death

these are not mere drug users..... they are people who engage in criminal behaviors that damage other people

Yeah, but you see, it doesn’t really happen if nobody knows about it.

Re: “people don’t go to federal prison for minor drug use”

Yes, I mostly agree with your statement, and I have made that point many times in previous years.

I would add, though, that quite often drug users end up in federal and state prisons because they test positive while on parole, or they plead down from a more serious charge, or they are convicted felons in possession.

I would also point out that drug dealers are often drug users themselves.

I think the fact that Americans can be legally denied or fired from jobs, denied or evicted from federal housing, and denied welfare benefits because of drug use tells us that our legal system affirmatively asserts a correlation between drug use and bad behavior.
