USGS Widens Seismic Risk Zone in California
NBC Bay Area ^ | Friday, Jul 18, 2014 | Chris Roberts

The earthquake-risk zone in California just got bigger.

New faults have been discovered in California, where the earthquake hazard zone has grown.

In most places, anyway.

San Jose and Vallejo are at higher risk of earthquakes, while Oakland is at a slightly lower -- but still high -- risk of a temblor, according to the US Geological Survey.

California and the greater West Coast are at the greatest risk of earthquakes of any region in the United States, the USGS found, but other areas in the country are now at higher risk as well following the 5.8 magnitude quake that hit Virginia in 2011, the LA Times reported.

The discovery of new faults raised the risk for San Jose and Vallejo, but at the same time, "new understanding of earthquake fault processes" meant that Oakland's risk was downgraded.

The USGS hasn't yet tied increased incidences of quakes in Oklahoma to pumping wastewater in deep wells, the newspaper reported.

“The USGS hasn’t yet tied increased incidences of quakes in Oklahoma to pumping wastewater in deep wells, the newspaper reported.”

Not yet but I’m sure they are working on it.

The USGS has done fairly well with risk assessment in OK. They’ve found some old data that suggests earthquake swarms at low magnitude have historically come and gone in the area. The enviros couldn’t have liked that.

Not at all! They can't stand any "real world facts" that disagree with their "save the Earth" Agenda 21 fantasies.

Hmmmm ..?? does that mean higher INSURANCE RATES for home and business owners ..??

Kinda looks like that type of scheme to me.

One of the largest earthquakes in that area destroyed the Bay Bridge, and totally collapsed a double-decker highway for a lot of miles.

No doubt this is for increasing insurance rates and including more homes in the earthquake insurance requirement.

Being as the southern end of the San Andreas fault is less than 15 miles away down at the low point of our Coachella Valley, I hope that when it rips, it does so waaaay up north.

Was there for the 1989 quake. Before that day, had been caught in rush hour traffic on the northbound lower deck of the “Cyprus” returning from “N.A.S. Alameda”. The truck traffic overhead caused the lower roadway to bounce stopped cars, which in retrospect was a strong hint about structural integrity.

As for the “Bay Bridge”, one end of a roadway section dropped from the upper deck to block the lower deck, when the Oakland end jogged 6 inches East and bolts sheared. The approach and toll plaza on the Oakland side liquified thus no access from Hwy. 880 until rebuilt.

However the bridge itself was quickly repaired. For many months, everyone from “Mare Island” with business on “Treasure Island” went the long way down Hwy.101 to the west end approach then across. “N.S.C. Oakland” was a massively steel re-enforced building which refused to budge, and scuttlebutt was the parking pavement buckled and flowed around the obstruction.

I’ve met another person who was in the wrong place (but on the right day).

My former boss was visiting NYC on 9/10. He was on one of the very high floors .. visiting with a brokerage house he did business with. He left NYC that same afternoon.

The next day - the whole company was destroyed when the airplane plowed into the WTC.
