OSAGE CITY, Kan.
Milton Wolf reminds voters, without fail, that hes new to politics.
Yet he performs as if born to the trade.
Ready with a smile. Just-right firmness on the handshake teamed always with just-folks patter. Good looks eclipsed only by those of the wife and kids.
And above all, the Senate hopeful remains ever eager to share his conviction that the nations founders got it right and those guys in Washington today consistently get things wrong. He thinks theyve been getting it wrong for about a century.
As for long-serving fellow Republican U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts, well, its nothing personal, but I think 47 years in Washington is too long. Dont you?
Washington politicians, he implores, keep stealing liberty that the U.S. Constitution made an American birthright. To drive home his point, if the Leawood radiologist hasnt already, he reliably underscores the heart of his campaign leading up to the Aug. 5 primary.
Im a doctor, not a politician, he says. Im a constitutional conservative.
Wherever the conversation travels next, hell steer it back to those cornerstones.
Hes a tea party candidate with the polish of the practiced mainstream. Often on the attack on Roberts, on President Barack Obama, on how the former is too easy on the latter Wolf pounds on time-tested talking points: government as more problem than solution; the superiority of Kansas common sense over Washington regulations; the negative powers of taxes.

Kansans like Roberts and what’s not to like. He plays the conservative pretty well, at least when people are paying attention. He takes care of the big Agri businesses and whatever is left of the aviation industry in Kansas after Obama got finished with it. OK, he doesn’t have time for any other of his constituents, but what do you expect from a guy who lives in Virginia. You can be assured that he will look after Kansas and Kansas will get what it deserves. Why, since Milton Wolf decided to run against him, he has even made some trips to Kansas. That’s dedication right there.
“Kansans like Roberts and whats not to like. He plays the conservative pretty well, at least when people are paying attention.”
Just love your sarcasm. And yet, there are people here on FR ( whom I assume are Kansans) that are apolectic that anyone is sullying “their beloved Pat.” As they say, we get the government we vote for, but it is surprising the abject loyalty to these old fossils. One poster said that “Kansas owed a debt of gratitude to Pat Roberts for staying on the job for all these years.” Are you kidding? He made the Reagan point that “life it tough, and it’s tougher if you are stupid.”
The only hope we have of getting rid of old farts like Roberts and Cochran is the fact that God DOES have term limits. “It’s appointed unto man once to die and then the judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27)
