Steven Salaita is one of the leaders of the anti-Israel academic boycott movement in the United States. He even has authored a guide for other faculty as to how to implement boycotts of Israel at their own universities.
Salaita currently is an associate professor of English at Virginia Tech and starting in August will join the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaigns American Indian Studies Dept.
Salaitas Twitter feed is crudely anti-Israel and has been since long before the recent Gaza conflict. Maybe that will be an issue for a later day.
But for today its worth noting that Salaita is following the path we are seeing widely on social media and elsewhere, including among leaders of the Boycott Divest and Sanctions movement in the United States blaming Zionism for anti-Semitism.
We saw it in my post yesterday about a photoshop showing Theodor Herzl, the founder of modern Zionism, giving birth to Hitler an image approved of by Max Blumenthal, a frequent anti-Israel BDS speaker on campuses.
And we see it in this tweet by Salaita, blaming the recent outbursts of anti-Semitism around the world on Zionists who eagerly conflating Jewishness and Israel and therefore are partly responsible when people say antisemitic shit in response to Israeli terror. (See Featured Image)
As we have seen in the recent anti-Semitic demonstrations in Europe, Turkey and even Boston, Jew hatred is as powerful a motivating force now as it has been for millenia long before modern Zionism.
Did Zionists cause the pro-Palestinian protesters to carry signs that the Star of David is the Star of the Devil and The Jews are Beasts?
The Gaza conflict has been a clarifying event in many ways, not the least of which is how Twitter has opened a window into the soul of the anti-Israel boycott movement. &
I am opposed to my tax dollars being used to pay NAZIS.
This professor seems to have it in his mind that Jews no longer have the right of expression or action in today’s world.
Zionists are the new “fascists”?
What a strange inversion of cause and effect.
Zionists have declared, “Never again!” Are they not permitted this point of view? If not, what is the reasoning for denying them the right to continued existence? Or is that a “prohibited” question?
I wonder just why we ever imagined that a religion where vast numbers of people all over the world in Sunni and Shia communities kill and maim each other every day, simply because of the perceived relative importance of ancient prophets and their relatives, would ever show any tolerance at all to a race with a completely different set of beliefs.
If you want a real target for your outrage, boycotts and denunciations, go Muslim.
Beat me to it.....
You mean F###ING NAZIS! They should be wearing swastika armbands & singing the Horst Wessel Lied but they’re too dishonest for that.
Anyway, Israel is kicking jihadi @zz in Gaza, so the campus crazies are breaking out the serious ganja, just to forget.
Jews are the reason for anti-semitism. If there were no Jews no one would hate them.
Rockets randomly fired into Israel = No problem.
Targeted response by Israel to protect its people = Israeli terror.
Professor = Moron.
