Skip to comments.Jarrett: We must end pregnancy discrimination

More than 30 years ago, Congress wisely passed the Pregnancy Discrimination Act. Yet today, many pregnant women still experience unfair and unnecessary challenges on the job.
Nondiscrimination has been the law of the land for over three decades, yet, in some workplaces, the standard for treatment of pregnant women has remained in the dark ages. Some are fired or demoted, with no hesitation, when a modest accommodation would allow them to continue to work and support their families.
The stories are heart-wrenching and preventable. There's the pregnant woman who was terminated when, in violation of company policy, she started carrying a water bottle on advice of her doctor to fight urinary and bladder infections.
Or the store clerk who was fired when her physician restricted her to lifting only lighter loads due to her pregnancy, even though during the course of work she rarely needed to lift heavier weights.
I vividly remember early on in my career when I was eight months pregnant, working literally around the clock, and worrying that each trip to the restroom or my need to catch the occasional catnap was causing my colleagues to question whether I could keep up....

Regent: "A person appointed to administer a State because the Monarch is a minor, is absent or is incapacitated."
I think it’s discriminatory that men aren’t allowed to get pregnant. ...

when I was eight months pregnant, working literally around the clock, and worrying that each trip to the restroom or my need to catch the occasional catnap was causing my colleagues to question whether I could keep up....
Well, Val, considering that your “colleagues” would be
the ones picking up YOUR slack, I’d say they had a real
interest in the process.
so Jarrett is behind all the crazy things coming out of the WH
All? Doubtful. Many? Probably.
Satan’s mouthpiece, the shrew named Jarrett speaks.
We should sue!
Why is Valerie Jarrett giving directives? Why are the ideas of a Muslim-Brotherhood-connected, EVIL, witch being promoted by CNN? Obama is too stoned to do his job? The Muslim Brotherhood will now do his job?
Jarrett and the Muslim Brotherhood are behind everything that comes out of the WH.
The result of pushing this agenda is much higher employment rates for women over 40 relative to those of childbearing age.
It’s all about the “war on women” drumbeat.
You’ll hear a lot more before November.
So, Valerie, maybe businesses will just hire older women instead of listening to you, especially since it is none of your damn business!
Businesses don’t work like the government, Valerie, they have to make decisions based on what is profitable to them or close their doors.
Jarrett is a pathological liar, as well as having an agenda for everything, that has nothing to do with whatever subject she raises. This being accepted as an axiom, what is she really up to?
Nothing even slightly associated with the subject at hand, of course.
Maybe this communist Iranian nutjob plans on running for Mullahness in Chief
Lizard Woman speaks...
Pregnancy is a choice, generally speaking, that a woman (and her “mate”) make.
It is also the eventual natural state of a woman in the course of human reproduction, and in that sense it is an “involuntary” possibiity as a part of a woman’s nature.
And it comes with costs - in time and expenses, to support.
HOW MUCH of that OUGHT TO BE a woman’s responsibility, and where it affects her time and effectiveness on her employmemt, how much should be born by or assisted by the employer?
The whole of it should be by agreement between employee and employer, not legal fiat.
If one accepted Jarrets philosophical argument then you’d have to demand that employers pay for condoms for male employees AND provode them paid time off during the pregnacy of the mother of their child, wife or not.
Jarret, absolute Marxist as she is, is simply desirous of transferring all parenting responsibilities to the state or as a mandate by the state against employers, making employers mere de facto public utility extensions of the state.
I think it’s discrimination when a baby is aborted without a chance to try living~ or have a voice!
“Pregnancy discrimination” ??????
If you got hired for a 40 hour a week job, then why did you get pregnant? Who is supposed to take up the slack while you are pregnant?
The only thing this witch ever worked “round the clock” on was the destruction of America; and, that’s a task she in which she is still engaged.
Yeah, I just like answering absurdity with another absurdity.
My outtie is too small to pass a baby....
Fine by me. I want em working so I don’t have to talk to em so much....
Discrimination? Yes, we need to get man pregnant...
Was Jar Jar working in a clock factory?
This is actually on her desk at the White House, according to NBC.
I like it. At least someone is in charge other than Obama and Biden.
Pregnancy is one problem ValHar will never have to deal with.
She references a pregnancy in the article.
These people are insane.
I didn’t know she had children. She’s like a ghost.
how many pregnant staffers work 18 hour days in the WH?
How many pregnant staffers has valerie hired?
The whole of it should be by agreement between employee and employer, not legal fiat
Oh, gimme a freaking break. Five minutes of research shows us that Valjar was born in 1956, married in 1983, and had her daughter in 1984 when she was working as a real estate attorney. She was hardly an office monkey or working in a cubicle, and I highly doubt anyone was scrutinizing her bathroom breaks or considering terminating her because she was pregnant.
I believe she has 1 daughter but still that male should get a hero medal for having to procreate with Lizard Woman.
Anyone who works in a US corporation know that this claim by this dictator is nothing less than warm, moist BS.
Pregnant women are treated like royalty in US corporations.
I think it’s discriminatory that it is so often men that pick up the slack for women who go on maternity leave and then complain that they aren’t earning as much as the man, who kept working all along, kept picking up slack left and right, working late hours to get that extra work done...
I am 75 years old and have NEVER seen a valuable employee fired for any reason....
So was I.
at night, they all look the same.....
As being ‘considered past her prime’ so to speak,a pregnancy now might produce more than an unwanted off spring. If she were to have a child as did Sarah...what would the lizard woman do? Every woman should be pregnant once; and every man, too. (technology is grand!)/sarcasm
“In 1983 Jarrett married William Robert Jarrett, son of Chicago Sun-Times reporter Vernon Jarrett. She attributes her switch from a private to a public career to their daughter Laura’s birth and her own desire to do something that would make their daughter proud.
To one reporter’s emailed question about her divorce, she replied, “Married in 1983, separated in 1987, and divorced in 1988. Enough said.” In a Vogue profile, she further explained “We grew up together. We were friends since childhood. In a sense, he was the boy next door. I married without really appreciating how hard divorce would be.””
