The Internal Revenue Service said it will monitor churches and other houses of worship for electioneering in a settlement reached with an atheist group.

The settlement was reached Friday (July 18) in federal court in Madison, Wis., where the initial lawsuit was filed in 2012 by the Freedom from Religion Foundation, a Wisconsin-based atheist advocacy group that claims 20,000 members nationwide.

The suit alleged the IRS routinely ignored complaints by the FFRF and others about churches promoting political candidates, issues or proposed legislation. As part of their tax-exempt status, churches and other religious groups are prohibited from engaging in partisan political activity.

Jackbooted government thugs entering my house of worship, under the false charge of ‘electioneering’? Bring it. That’s a hill I’m willing to die on. And I bet there’s a few who would do it with me.

The churches should speak freely and start by preaching on the evils of taxing speech.

Sure they’ll pay a tax but they’ll get a bit of their soul back.

Partisan political activity is only the endorsement of candidates or political parties. Churches are allowed to promote issues or proposed legislation all they want.

It’s just killing Lois Lerner that she can’t head the department monitoring conservative churches, of any color.

I have never been in favor of any politician,
coming forward before the assembly, and
currying favor among the congregation.

I have heard pastors speak on political
issues, but some spoke with the decision
left with the congregants, which I believe
is the more American method.

“Hey this is wrong, and here’s why. But, YOU
must make the final decision.”

That way, it is not YOU vs Pastor Jones, but YOU
vs Providence.

Does this include a ban on political activity by black churches?

Rev. Jackson?

Rev. Sharpton?

etc.?
