Georgia Runoff: Republicans Pick Senate and House Nominees Tuesday

Georgia Republicans will pick their nominee for Senate in a runoff Tuesday, ending Democratic nominee Michelle Nunn’s nine-week wait for an opponent in the open-seat contest.

The Senate contest has reverberated around the Peach State, creating three open-seat House races with GOP runoffs that will also be decided Tuesday.

In the statewide race, many Republicans said Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., has a small edge over former Dollar General and Reebok CEO David Perdue. Both of whom have spent millions on the anticipated low-turnout contest, and polls close at 7 p.m.

In May, Perdue came in first in a seven-candidate Republican primary field that included three members of Congress with 31 percent — below the 50 percent threshold to avoid a runoff. Kingston came in second with 26 percent.

But turnout in a mid-summer runoff is unpredictable. And a Republican runoff in Kingston’s 1st District could also help boost the congressman’s chances because turnout may be higher in his geographic base.

The Senate race is rated Favored Republican by the Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call.

All three House races are rated Safe Republican contests by the Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call.

Were exit polls taken? It would be interesting to see how many Democrats crossed over to vote for Perdue. (Although he won by too many votes for Kingston to be able to challenge the results based on people who voted illegally after having voted in the RAT primary last month.)

Looking around this morning I can’t find any exit polls. One article did note that Perdue spent $3 million of his own money on the campaign.

I agree. I just hope Perdue does not turn out to be the major effing disappointment I suspect he will be.

The Senate runoff was a big disappointment. David Perdue won by 51% to 49%, close but not enough where a recount would matter. Perdue strikes me as Southern Fried Romney.

The House races:

District 1- state Senator Buddy Carter defeated conservative doctor Bob Johnson. A disappointment, but not a disaster, Carter seems acceptable.

District 10- Jody Hice could be a gaffe machine in the future, the Todd Akin of Georgia, but he’s safe to win the election. Mike Collins was also conservative. As long as Hice doesn’t run for statewide office.

District 11- I rather like Bob Barr, but Barry Loudermilk has good Libertarian credentials too. Also, Barr’s just ending his career, while Loudermilk will be around for a while. I’m happy with this result.

Buddy Carter said that? I had no idea. His victory is not good news.

Looking into it further, in complete context his (Buddy Carter’s) remarks were not nearly as bad as I thought, obviously I was repeating a line from an attack ad. The full offensive quote was:

“some of the things that have happened so far are not so bad,”

He followed that with “the worst part is yet to come.”

The entire quoation

<<<<<<<<<<Another area that is of great concern to me, and of which I have just a little bit of experience, is health care. You know, we’re at a crossroads in our country today. We’re about to undertake Obamacare. So far it started, and some of the things that have happened so far are not so bad. But the worst part is yet to come. We are blessed in the United States with the best health care system in the world. And I want to make sure we keep that. Now, there are going to be drastic changes that take place with Obamacare. As a health care professional and a leader in health care, we need someone with experience, someone with health care experience, in Washington, D.C., to make sure that our health care system in the state of Georgia remains the very best in all the world, and I will commit to you I will make certain that happens. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

I don’t agree with him that Obamacare hasn’t been 100% awful but it’s not like he’s a quasi-supporter of it who then flip flopped, as I erroneously thought. He’s consistently called for it’s repeal.

Still would have preferred that he lost.

He ran attack ads of his own, attacking Johnson for membership in and endorsement from groups that support Obamacare.”, those “groups” being 1 group, the AMA, Johnson is a doctor.

I don’t like to see dishonest ads in GOP primaries.

Oh yeah I mean what county a guy is from, that’s much more important than optimizing the partisan balance of the districts!!!! Can’t trust those a-holes from the next county over!!

I’m not aware of any exit polling

This article

http://insideradvantage.com/2014/07/21/major-democratic-crossover-unlikely-in-georgia-gop-runoff/

Says there was no major crossover effort and implies those that did crossover would focuses on picking a weaker candidate (I think that’s the inexperienced Perdue but he does better in recent polls than Kingston).

I don’t agree with that, If democrats in Missisippi thought that way they’d have voted for McDaniel, hoping disgruntled Cochran fans would vote dem like some Lugar fans did in Indiana. They instead voted for the RINO Cochran.

Our side also doesn’t think that way, remember the 2004 rat primary for Governor in Missouri? Incumbent Bob Holden was super unpopular and dead meat for the general election but we had freepers (1 idiotic jerk in particular got my goat) here BOASTING about crossing over and beating him in the rat primary with Claire McCaskil, who nearly upset Matt Blunt, and because of her raised profile was able to win the Senate seat 2 years later.

I would think however many crossover rat votes there were, they mostly supported Perdue because he’s less conservative.

Once again I ask what district of GA do you live in? The reason I ask is because I don’t think you live in GA or have any idea of the political makeup of the state. In fact if I remember correctly you are always front and center on the confederate threads bashing the confederacy. So why are you so interested in our state’s politics? I’m waiting for your answer.

The magic of search engines. The jerk I remember was from a discussion about the 2004 primary in 2009. So my memory isn’t as great as I thought!

GOP crossover in 2004 primary was just his nonsensical fantasy. The guy predicted that no Missouri Governor would ever be reelected again, all would be denied renomination if they ran, I wish I remembered to rub it in his face when *ickless Nixon was reelected (after having faced no serious primary opposition).

I figured as much since you seem to have no idea about what counties are conservative or not. You have no clue of why Perdue won or Kingston lost since you don’t know anything about the the state of GA. Anymore than I have a clue about Iowa or Colorado.

Wasn’t Perdue endorsed by some black rapper right before the run-off? That’s what made me wonder whether there had been a concerted crossover effort by Democrats to nominate
Perdue.

“Oh yeah I mean what county a guy is from, that’s much more important than optimizing the partisan balance of the districts!!!! Can’t trust those a-holes from the next county over!!”

It wasn’t that they didn’t trust someone from one county over, it’s that the powers that be wanted to make sure that the district would elect someone from Hall County, and feared that a candidate from Gwinnet might win if it was too much of a suburban CD. So he drew the new GA-09 to include a bunch of rural counties and exurban counties west of Athens, making it ridiculously Republican. Spreading those Republicans around would have made the GA-10 and GA-07 safe instead of potentially competitive, and it would have allowed them to draw a safely GOP GA-12 (instead of a CD that reelected its RAT incumbent), but it was more important for the Hall County bigshots to make sure that Hall County got to pick a congressman.

BTW, I misremembered the person pushing a Hall County CD. It wasn’t the Speaker of the House, but the President of the Senate, Lt. Governor Casey Cagle. Cagle is from Hall County, as is Gov. Nathan Deal. Those are the two Republicans responsible for the GA-09 being über-Republican at the expense of other CDs.

I mistook district nine for district ten, big deal.

What are you mad at me because I think Hice is a bit nutty? Sorry to disagree with you about him, your majesty. About women running for office he said “If the woman’s within the authority of her husband, I don’t see a problem,”, that’s a bit nutty to me. And the creationist Broun is a bit nutty to me too.

To answer your second question Why do I care who is elected to Congress? LOL. Is that a serious question? Every member of Congress has power over all our lives.

You never take interest in races outside of Georgia? I remember you posting favorably about Tancredo in Colorado.

Your assertion that I can know nothing about Georgia elections because I don’t live there is a silly one, often repeated by people whenever somebody from out of state DARES to disagree with them about something.

Based on some on the morons who’ve said that to me I know MUCH more about their state’s politics than them.

I’m NOT putting you in that group Georgia Girl but I’m just saying, it’s a stupid and lazy debating tactic that I’m tired of addressing. If you want to debate with me stick to the issue at hand rather than attempting to undercut my credibility, I can read and I can see and I can hear, therefore I’m capable of being knowledgeable about politics in Canada or Ireland, let alone Georgia, and SO ARE YOU if you so choose.

I know, I was being sarcastic with that line.

Personally I don’t give a rat’s patoot where someone is from and dislike that being a factor in redistricting ahead of partisan optimization.

If my Congressman could be a conservative from the other end of the state, I’d be thrilled.

Ah, he tweeted his support and then deleted it when his followers complained he endorsed a Republican.

Maybe he’s a Republican, or maybe he was high.

Like I said you have no clue about the politics of GA or the make up of the state. Your posts about the counties and districts are ignorant since you are ignorant of the politics of the state. You are just spouting nonsense.

Tom Tancredo ran for the Presidency in 2008. He is a national figure. Many people outside of Colorado know him and what he stands for. I would never attempt to dissect the where’s and why fors of the internal politics of another state.

What state are you from? Why not comment on the politics of that state where hopefully you have some valid information.
