Catholic Charities not daunted by immigrant proposal push-back
Catholic Review ^ | 7/22/14 | Maria Wiering

After news broke July 17 of Catholic Charities of Baltimore’s aim to house unaccompanied immigrant children at a Baltimore-area facility, the first response Executive Director William J. McCarthy received was positive: an e-mail praising the agency’s decision with a pledge of $200 in support. Others like it have poured in to the agency, Maryland’s largest social service provider.

As for the detractors?

“Critics are cowards,” McCarthy said.

“Most of the responses I’ve received are from supporters,” he said. “What I’m really encouraged by is the number of affirming, supportive and thoughtful people who recognize this for the humanitarian crisis that it is – that we are focused on caring for children in need – and have the ability to separate the humanitarian needs for children from the politics and policies surrounding immigration and immigration reform.”

McCarthy was among Maryland religious leaders Gov. Martin J. O’Malley called to Annapolis July 21 to discuss the state’s response to the masses of Latino children and youths who have crossed the U.S.-Mexico border illegally without parents or guardians.

“What the governor recognizes is that this crisis is about the inherent dignity and worth of every person,” McCarthy said. “Who better to speak and give voice to the needs of children than our religious leaders?”

I'll remember that the next time I get an appeal, Bill. I'll be too afraid to put a check in the envelope. What a self-righteous ass.

Cowards, eh?

That comment will be at the forefront of my mind when the appeal goes out for donations.

Tells me their cash flow is coming from Obama and not the collection basket.

It seems the Church in America has given up on making it go with Anglo Catholics (due to their increasing lack of interest), and are determined to either fill their pews with Latinos or simply function as a government social services agency.

Sure. With my guilt and your gelt, we can do anything. However history has shown a nation without borders ceases to be a distinct culture. Mr. McCarthy, however noble his goals, has to understand that some people have reservations about Mr. Obama’s current efforts to “fundamentally transform America”.

The Vatican has behind the push since the Reagan days. The vatican doesn’t believe in separation....... they believe in state control when they control the state

“It seems the Church in America has given up on making it go with Anglo Catholics (due to their increasing lack of interest), and are determined to either fill their pews with Latinos...”

I want nothing to do with Catholic Charities and am infuriated by 90% of what the Catholic bishops say about politics. However, you are wrong about what is motivating the “Church in America”. First, Catholic leaders are not skillful at advancing the interests of the Church; instead, they are so obsessed with inclusiveness and ecumenism that even when they build Cathedrals (e.g. Roger Mahony in LA), they hire atheist architects and announce they want to build a Cathedral “for all people”, meaning not just for Catholics. (As if the Lutherans in Los Angeles gave a damn about a new Catholic church building.) Second, if one is crassly concerned with which types of people are worth investing in for the future of the church, “Anglo Catholics” are a better bet. Latino Catholics arrive poor and do work hard, but many are or become storefront Protestant Christians, while many others succumb to the welfare lifestyle and have babies out of wedlock. Regardless of race or ethnicity, married, middle class people make the most reliable parishioners, and the chances that the Latinos in great numbers will end up married, middle class, practicing Catholics who vote pro-life are low.

Don’t you think the ecumenism is also a misguided attempt to bolster sagging numbers? In my area we’ve gone from closing schools to closing churches (and we have a lot of Hispanic immigration here - both legal and illegal); many Hispanics are no longer coming here to work, and contribute little to their parishes (those that even attend). Storefront “iglesias” are all over now; these people didn;t come here to fund the retirement of aging Americans with their Social Security deductions, and they certainly didn;t come here to pay some guys to live in a rectory.

Once the hierarchy decided the schools weren’t worth saving, they lost a critical link to the next generation of “Anglo-American” Catholics. Why would I donate at my parish to subsidize a school I can’t even afford for my own children? Taken a step further, why would I donate to a Church that seems so determined to politically undermine its very congregants with their political stances? Until I see pro-abortion politicians excommunicated, they won’t see a dime of my money.

The deadliest disease that the teenagers from central America are bringing with them is illegal drugs.

We are being told that they are running away from the devastation of the drug cartels.

Trying to put myself in their shoes:

I'm in a strange land with different language and culture. I have to earn money, I have no marketable skills, and there is wide spread us of drugs here.

In my home country were I have connections, they speak my language, there is wide spread trafficking in drugs. I can make money here.

Last year I removed the Boy Scouts as a beneficiary in my will. I will now remove Catholic Charities.

Self-righteousness is just a phony form of respectability. Catholic Charities is enabling criminals. If they have a tax-exempt status is should be revoked.

These charities are making millions and millions from the federal govt to perform these tasks.

Take the king's gold, dance his tune.

I don’t know if all Catholic Charities are connected, but I think this is the last straw for me too.
