Many American colleges and universities are in the thrall of diversity, but none more so than my institution, the University of Wisconsin. This spring, the university adopted a new plan that, according to Board of Regents policy, [p]laces the mission of diversity at the center of institutional life so that it becomes a core organizing principle.
That is, promoting diversity appears to be more important than teaching students.
This Framework for Diversity and Inclusive Excellence sailed through our Faculty Senate without the least bit of attention, much less the sifting and winnowing on which it prides itself.
Although much of the language is a thicket of clichés, no one dared challenge it. Moreover, there was no probing of the ramifications of the plan. Apparently, diversity has become such a sacred cow that even tenured professors are afraid to question it in any way.
To begin, the universitys justification for the new policy is difficult to understand: Our commitment is to create an environment that engages the whole person in the service of learning, recognizing that individual differences should be considered foundational to our strength as a community.

I’m waiting to see how they pull it off in real subjects - like math and physics.
A simple differential equation or EM question or two will easily separate the liberals from the real scientists...but I fully expect that questioning a grad will soon be banned.
I think they should take the same approach with their football and basketball teams. Bo Ryan wouldn’t care if he had to play a 5’ 11” Hispanic guy w/ a 22% shooting percentage who can’t play defense. Surely Gary Anderson would be happy to start a black QB who can’t read the playbook or hit an open receiver if his life depended on it.
Oh wait...that would hurt revenue wouldn’t it?
Why not just give a diploma to every minority and/or a member of a special class when they sign up?

Rudest, most prejudiced people I ever met come from north of the Mason-Dixon Line. They feel they are superior to southern people, what they base this belief on, I can’t imagine. Wish they would retire and vacation in Canada and not inflict themselves on us. We got our own home grown a55holes and don’t need theirs.
Tell the full tenured professors that this will be approved as soon as they agree to share their salaries with the lowest teaching assistant and that all instructors at Wisconsin will get the same pay and benefits: And it is be from averaging all levels of pay and benefits will all getting the average, and NO more.

Sounds like the grades will still have the same value for white students. Perhaps even more.

I know a young woman who went through college and law school as an ethnic scholarship student. She was accepted to law school even though her score on the law board did not make the cut, nor did her GPA, even though she was an ethnic studies major, with a minor in sociology.
As a law student. They had no real classes after the first year, everything was on the job training and papers that they wrote about the training that were turned into a mentor. The woman skipped corporate law all together because she planned to work in tribal law. She told me that she could not get less than a B+ , so she kind of slacked off in her senior year and let the others compete for top slots and graduation rankings.
She now teaches at the law school. It sounds to me as though grade equity has been going on at top universities for a long time.
The only numbers more closely guarded that Baraq’s golf scores are his LSATs.....
Be sure to check the diploma hanging on your Doctor’s wall.
How about equity in the distribution of effort.

We are seeing the harvest from the Johnson ‘Great Society’ degeneration of excellence. Evil is subtle, but truly obliterating to humankind. Those under its spell never see their demise as it is happening.

You really think the academic mentality is any different at universities in the south? Allrighty then!
"Grade Distribution" used to be a great way to explain taxation and income and wealth distribution to kids who've never had a job. Sports examples work well, too.
Usually, they know how hard it can be to EARN a good grade, especially in a difficult subject, and they usually are also familiar with slackers and with getting poor grades from not doing the work.
Unless they are a natural born slacker, the idea of taking their hard earned As and distributing them to the rest of the class so that everyone else gets a B usually makes them unhappy.
It's good to learn this lesson early. Our world would look much better now if more had.
Oh well...maybe a future generation will benefit from our example: From landing on the moon to crazier than a loon in less than half a lifetime! How fast and how hard the once mighty fall.
This is a misleading title. The university wants to have minorities be able to get the same grades as majorities (and Asians). I posted this on the first thread on this topic last night:

The actual report is just the kind of liberal, feel-good BS about providing more support for minorities who might not be able to handle college education.

Coupling the "mission of diversity" with the concept of a "core organizing principle," is an excellent example of totally confused thinking. Suggesting some form of grade cheapening, of course, is a further insult to those deemed to be needed to secure that idiotic "mission."

Adding to your excellent pay equity proposal we need equality of job content and work hours. These tenured professors and administrators have taken advantage of teaching assistants and adjuncts for years. They are state employees so the legislature should require all of them be in the classroom teaching 6 hours per day and in their offices available to students 2 hours per day. Any extracurricular endeavors (book writing, speeches outside the university, research trips, sabbaticals, or consulting) should take place off the university clock during weekends, vacation time, or unpaid leave of absences. In addition, they should have the same type of offices and office furnishings as adjuncts and teaching assistants. These liberal professors want equality in the workplace. The legislature should give it to them in pay, work hours, and working conditions.
I've used that an example to teach my 6th graders what socialism is all about. I only have them for an hour once a week during the school year, and our Old Testament curriculum is packed.
When I take 20% of hard-working Maria's 100% to give to slacker Jimmy's 60% to "even things out", they get the point very quickly. lol
It is not just the universities that are moving away from grades, it is unions, as well. The left would like to see promotion by seniority in union jobs, no testing.
They pushing hard for a federalized union for all first responders, police, fire fighters and para medics, which would no only spread the costs of expensive urban benefit packages to rural areas, the union would also control the hiring and promotions. In other words, the jobs would go to city union members and promotion would be by seniority only.
At the core all unions are based on Communism and we are now seeing the masks drop away. I did not know this, so thanks. One more thing to worry about. Ban unions, they are nothing more than criminal enterprises.
I wonder what happens if you are one black genius, in a class of average white students. Does the black genius get a C?

All this will boil down to is “Yeah, but did you get a White 4.0 or a Black 4.0?”
Ever been to a Southern University? I've been to universities in the west (California) upper Midwest and midwest and the South. They don't teach espouse that liberal crap in the South - at least not the good schools.
It is a worse than I described it. I left out the part about making the last two years of high school optional and instead, putting the potential drop outs directly into union apprenticeships and training programs, mostly in first responder unions and healthcare, which has already been taken over by the SEIU.

They basically already do; have you ever read emails from tokens with degrees? It is disheartening; they will never catch up until they are treated as adults.

Definitely; it is evident everywhere in the workplace. In the end, you end up with a hierarchy/pay scale topped by white and Asian men because they can actually do the work. The preferred minorities underneath clamoring for pay equality don’t comprehend the fact that they are only hired to fend off lawsuits; nothing is (or can be) expected of them.
Since they’ve tightened their belts at my job I’ve taken to working the hours of the white women in the office; not one minute more than that for which I am paid. The unpaid overtime I worked for years as a “salaried” employee are a thing of the past...
Having stated the above, I would add one other comment on the subject of this thread, to my earlier post (#29): The idea that the purpose of education has anything whatsoever to do with equalizing people, is the clearest demonstration possible of the compulsion driven motivation for both the pursuit of diversity & the general Leftist attack on reality.
All of us differ. Recognizable racial & ethnic differences are not some sort of evil to be rectified, but part of the reality that all people differ. Education should always be directed towards drawing out what is best in the makeup of any subject; should always be addressed to optimum individual development. All economic progress since the most primitive cultures has been based upon some aspects of the division of aptitudes, utilizing a division of labor, to better use the particular aptitudes & traits of each individual involved.
This is so important in the social & economic development of any community, that to deliberately sabotage that development with an effort to equalize the disparate & complex bundles of talents--or lack thereof--of motivations--or lack thereof--by expending effort to level individuals (rather than encourage individual development) reflects not only the fanaticism of the far Left, but a willful indifference to everything we know about the complexity of human nature.

You state significant truth. But in relation to the idiocy prevalent at the subject University, it is a case of “casting pearls before swine.”
When I was matriculating through a U-Wisc college more than twenty years ago, my major, geography, was virtually all male as were the professors. The college, in an effort to get more diversity, tried to force the department to hire a female professor. One of my profs. recounted with disgust being force to interview some female candidates who were unqualified. I knew this prof. was a liberal, but he was highly unhappy about hiring people he viewed as unqualified, minorities or not. They did not hire a female prof at that time.
A few years ago I read an article in the local rag which featured some comments by a female geog. prof at my alma mater who was not there when I was. This female prof. was a fullfledged nut case.The ironic thing was that when I was still attending classes, we used to have a female prof. from another college give lectures to us concerning a technical area where none of the other male profs had expertise. But since they were not hiring people to teach the subject she was an expert in, she was never hired by the university.
Well, aint that just special. Locking in those union dues any way they can. I am working with a retired UAW electrician and he works like he is still in the union. Never saw a guy who knew more ways to slow up a job in order to get overtime in. He doesn’t work for me but after working 2 hours with him, if he did I would fire him. Period.
You didn’t earn that grade! Everyone gets a C.
