The number of cops killed nationwide in the line of duty was up 31 percent during the first six months of this year. A new report by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund shows California leading all states with eight police officer deaths, followed by New York, Florida, Texas and Virginia with four each. Fund Chairman Craig Floyd says there's been a 37-percent increase in traffic-related incidents and a 56-percent increase in officers killed by gunfire, five of them in ambush-style attacks.
Craig blames those attacks, including the one earlier this month on Jersey City police officer Melvin Santiago and one last month on two Las Vegas police officers, on anti-government sentiment and says law enforcement needs to get tougher.
According to their site, there have been 749 police deaths from the beginning of 2009 to date. There have been 70 this year, 28 of which are “fire arms related,” up from 17 YTD the previous year. I think friendly fire would be included in this category.
Total shot and killed over five and a half years—likely between 200 and 300—after one knocks out friendly fire, it wouldn’t surprise me if cops have shot and killed more innocent or helpless people over the period than cops shot by non-cops.

The annualized 2014 month-to- date numbers project approx. 120 total police line-of-duty deaths for 2014. Total line-of-duty deaths in 2013 was 95; much lower than most years.
When you consider the overall trend, the job of police officer is much safer than it used to be. There were 125 line of duty deaths in 2012; 179 in 2011; 177 in 2010 and 126 in 2009. In fact, police officer line-of-duty deaths were actually much higher in the 1980s and 1990s.
Regarding firearms related line-of-duty deaths, annualized 2014 month to date numbers project approx. total of 48 for 2014. This compares to 32 in 2013; 48 in 2012; 68 in 2011; 59 in 2010 and 49 in 2009. The authors premise of rising anti-government sentiment resulting in increased police line of duty deaths if BS, but it sure made a great headline.
No need to speculate, the data are readily available.
And you are correct. In 2012 there were 48 feloniously killed.

I suspect a good number of shootings of policemen occur where 1%s want to either keep their area clean or they are trying to gentrify an area that had previously been abandoned by People That Matter.
For many of us little people, cops stopped doing anything but write traffic reports years ago...

Importantly, the “anti-government sentiment” he mentions in New Jersey, was when a member of the Bloods street gang murdered a police officer, and was in turn killed at the time by a police officer, causing the Bloods gang to call for assassinating police officers in New Jersey. Not your typical “anti-government sentiment”.
As far as Las Vegas goes, it was the psychotic white couple who murdered two officers at lunch and several other people, dropping a Nazi flag on one and a Don’t Tread on Me flag on the other. Remember them? Total nuts. Were kicked out of the standoff at the ranch in Nevada.
In all the stats in this thread, odd that no cops commit suicide.
2013 had the fewest cops killed by gunfire since the 1800s. It’s hardly a surprise, however unfortunate, that we’d see an increase from that low number.
I find it curious that Illinois is missing from the list. After all, Chicago is the murder capital of the U.S.
And from a post further down, it looks like 38 tops for 2013—some of the vehicular stuff is fuzzy.
(And I’d argue that taking more precise data from a portion of a period which is random and not cherry picked isn’t speculating, but, when done with a margin of error in mind, estimation.—If you can come up with stats for the full five and a half years it would be great.)
Here's why I'm upset with this issue: The insanity of calling someone 'anti-govrenment' without listing people who are 'pro-governemtment' is a totalitarian move against people who are conservative.
There are "pro-government people AND anti government people.
List them both.
List the crimes of both groups.
List the number of cops killed by both groups. Do it as a percentage of population.
Tell the whole story...
So my original thought stays: Black democrats who are in favor of large government and lots of social programs do the highest percentage of crimes... as a portion of their share of the population. White Tea Party members (who believe in small government) do the LEAST amount of crime. Since killing a police officer IS a crime I'm including it ... the math will hold.
Bill Ayers - who ghost wrote 'Dreams of My Father' for President Obama ( AND IS A FRIEND of Obama's) wrote a book called 'Prairie Fire' and that book was dedicated to all the people who had killed a police officer.
Bill Ayers' book is NOT ONLY DEDICATED to cop KILLERS, AYERS NAMES THEM ALL.

I was trying to figure out what Hieronymus meant and so I looked it up and became
more confused about how a "Early Netherlandish painter" had anything to do with this.

The police are the enemy now. They won’t be getting any sympathy from this victim of federal tyranny.
Law enforcement is intensely aware of police suicide, but it is extremely hard to track, with arguments over ‘on duty’ or ‘off duty’, whether insurance will pay survivors the same for suicide, and if “someone is to blame for *driving* them to suicide”, not giving them appropriate counseling, not seeing the ‘signs’, etc., ad nauseum.
Generally, it is a nightmare for the entire department. Everybody will have to get psych evaluations, get drug tested, internal affairs will have to reexamine his entire record, any pending cases may have to be dismissed, you name it.
And then, at the national level, states report very different data to the FBI for its annual Uniform Crime Report.
Crime is down, this year has seen an increase to in ambush attacks on police, Chicago’s stats could be left out because they either don’t report uniform crime stats (highly unlikely) to the fib or did not or would not have mid year stats available for release.
Anyone blaming the increased deaths of officers from gunshots on anti govt extremists may he extrapolating based upon a couple of incidents to promote there political viewpoints.
