The Federal Aviation Administration told U.S. airlines they are prohibited from flying to the Tel Aviv airport in Israel for 24 hours starting Tuesday afternoon due to the potentially hazardous situation created by the armed conflict in Israel and Gaza.
The notice came after a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip landed near Israel's main airport Tuesday, wounding one Israeli and prompting all U.S. and some European and Canadian airlines to cancel flights to Tel Aviv - a reflection of high anxiety over air travel after the downing of a Malaysian jet over Ukraine.
It was the latest blow to Israel on a day when it announced that an Israeli soldier went missing following a deadly battle in the Palestinian territory, where the Israelis are fighting Hamas militants in the third conflict in just over five years. With the casualty toll mounting on both sides, the international community has stepped up diplomatic efforts and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon met with Egyptian and Israeli officials in a bid to revive a cease-fire proposal that was rejected by Hamas.
Israel's Transportation Ministry called on airlines to reverse their decision, insisting the Ben-Gurion Airport is safe and completely guarded and saying there is no reason to "hand terror a prize," by halting the flights.

U.S. flight ban could be Hamas’ biggest success in latest clash with Israel
Several airlines already had suspended operations or diverted flights.
The ban comes less than a week after a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 was shot down over Ukraine. For Hamas, it could be the biggest break the Islamist group has had since the most recent fighting started — potentially increasing Israeli’s physical and psychological isolation from the rest of the world. The airport handles about 14 million travelers a year.
United, Delta and USAir suspend flights to Israel - UPDATE FAA BANS US FLIGHTS, EUROPEANS FOLLOW
United, Delta and USAir have suspended all flights to Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport after a Hamas rocket this afternoon landed in Yahud, some 5 kilometers from the airport (Hat Tip: NY Nana). The White House says that it did not order the flights suspended, but Delta said it made its decision in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration.
Two U.S. airlines suspend Israel flights after rocket attack near airport [FAA suspends all flights]
7:41 P.M. The FAA prohibits all U.S. airlines from flying to and from Ben-Gurion International Airport “for a period of up to 24 hours.”
5:57 P.M. Delta Airlines and U.S. Airways suspend flights to and from Israel on Tuesday. This follows a warning from the Federal Aviation Authority given after a rocket fell earlier Tuesday in Yehud, near Ben-Gurion International Airport. United Airlines announced it will continue operating as usual.

Another example of Obama supporting terrorists
I do suspect that the flying public is not going to be enthused about flying there with rockets dropping within range of the airport ... :-) ...
People tend to get uneasy when rockets and planes mix in the same airspace.
That should be up to the passengers and the airlines.
Apparently four different major USA airlines suspended their own flights - indefinitely - to Israel, before the FAA acted.

Israel Transportation Minister: Cancellation of Flights to Israel Gives a Prize to Terror
Israels Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz said on Tuesday that the just announced cancellation of European and U.S. flights to Israel handed a victory to terrorism.
There is no reason for the American companies to stop their flight and give a prize to terror, Katz said, according to Jerusalem Post correspondent Niv Elis.
On Tuesday, four major U.S. airline carriers announced their decision to cancel flights heading to Israel indefinitely, one specifically citing the danger of Gaza rocket attacks near Israels Ben Gurion airport.
Shortly after the airlines announced their decision, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it told all U.S. airlines that flights to the airport are prohibited for 24 hours, according to The Associated Press. German carrier Lufthansa nixed all flights to and from Tel Aviv for the next two days, according to an ABC News correspondent, and Air France also suspended its flights to Israel.
The ban comes from the fact that Hamas is trying to hit planes as they come in, and missiles have struck near one of the big airports. You’re-a-peein’ countries have also suspended flights for the same reason. Note the words in the headline, obviously a word choice meant to mislead.
Thanks Star Traveler.
Did Hamas hire to Russians to do it? They seem to be real good at it.
This thread is food for thought. Some things may be more obvious than others.
Up to now, the rockets from Gaza have been of the "unguided" variety. No one really knows where they might land.
The Israelis have the technology to track a missile back to its point of origin. I assume they are using that ability. A rational response should be the obliteration of one square kilometer around the source of every future missile.
Should precision missiles or ground to air missiles ever be employed by the MMMs (muslim mass murderers) Gaza is history. Justifiably so.
It should be noteworthy to acknowledge that the Israelis are not digging tunnels to sneak into Gaza to slit infants' throats while they sleep.
The death toll of "civilians" in Gaza is the sole result of Hamas manipulation of the population. The Hamas leadership hides, the population is herded into harm's way. Telegenic victims for the Hollywood morons' benefit.
In the battle between the savage and the civilized man, I will always side with the civilized man.
You said ... “A rational response should be the obliteration of one square kilometer around the source of every future missile.”
Israel doesn’t do that. I’m fact the IDF has posted videos of where they have spotted a Palestinian civilian accidentally getting in the way of a strike against a terrorist operative, and they have stopped the attack. I’ve seen another IDF posted video where they precisely hit a terrorist who was shooting off rockets from next to a hospital. He was ten feet away from the building and they obliterate him but it didn’t even touch the hospital.
The IDF ADVERTISES these kinds of videos to the world to show everyone “how they do it”.
Your one square kilometer is not how they do it.
FAA / TWA Flight 800
The FAA, the FBI, and the CIA lost ever bit of credibility they ever had with with the Weaver, Davidian, Oklahoma City, and TWA Flight 800 investigations.
The creepy TSA now rivals them for a barrel laugh when it comes to credibility and respect.
So when the FAA says something, I just laugh. Islamic people can stand up in a crowded aircraft and chant Islamic prayers very loudly, and be let go shortly after.
Grandmas and young women are searched, while people fitting the profile get a pass so we can avoid the appearance of racism. Never-mind avoiding the incidence of actual terrorism. Appearances come first!
Sorry, the FAA is a joke. The TSA is a joke. I have nothing but contempt for them and what they have done to our nation’s airports, making them a place I no longer want to be.
You seem to have missed my qualifier : accurate guided missiles. If the MMMs get those, and learn to use them, all prior experience and assumptions are gone forever.
What the response might be? I have no idea. But I do know it will be more intense than taking out one raghead standing on a corner!
