U.S. ally cuts off communications with Obama and seeks new trade outside dollar

On July 21, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan spoke in an interview with Turkey's ATV television, and confirmed that his office had cut off direct communications with President Obama, and in fact, were no longer even answering calls received from the White House. In addition to this startling announcement regarding a long standing U.S. ally, the Russian Ministry of Economic Development followed this up with a press release that stated that Turkey was quickly moving away from their reliance on the dollar as the global reserve currency, and is seeking increased trade with Russia in a mutually beneficial exchange of self-contained sovereign currencies.

Turkey's cold shoulder against President Obama and the U.S. began shortly after the Syrian crisis failure by the United States back in September of 2013. And since that time, Turkey has begun to move away from its U.S. alliance and has started seeking increased trade agreements with America's primary adversary Russia. Already the eighth ranked trading partner for Russia, Turkey is proposing an even greater share of this pie, and is willing to accede to Russia and China's agenda for a de-dollarized trade system that cuts out the reserve currency from most or all transactions.

Erdogan is more pro-Islamist than Obama.

It doesn't matter. The duty of the government is to maintain contacts - and ways of control - with all countries. Especially with bad ones. Now, with contacts and controls broken, the troubled country is going their own way - and the US's political foe hasn't missed an opportunity.

Maybe the Sue Me Sunni is too radical for most Islamic leaders?

Obama picked the wrong side in the internecine struggle among the many factions of Islamic jihadist militants out there. The two main branches, the Sunni and the Shi’ite, are centered roughly in Saudi Arabia and Iran, respectively, and each thinks the other to be an apostasy.

It is a little hard to figure Turkey in this interchange, as they are absolutely anti-Israeli, but the only faction actually engaged in combat with Israel at the moment is Hamas, supposedly a protectorate of the Muslim Brotherhood, and therefore part of the Sunni faction, but their resupply and logistics are being carried out by contacts working with Iran, the Shi’ite supporter. Turkey has been the intermediary charged with transporting the arms to Hamas, which sort of explains their bristling hostility, both for their justification and their continued recalcitrance in the face of various pressures to “cease and desist”.

Maybe Erdogan is taking his cues from the rest of the world and just disrespecting Obama on general principles.

When a relatively insignificant player such as Turkey’s Prime Minister begins disrespecting the “leader” of the (formerly) Free World, it ought to give one pause, to consider how far and how fast the territory once known as “the United States of America” has fallen.

I can recall when Turkey prevented us from going into Iraq from Turkey preventing the movement of the 2nd Infrantry Div during the Iraq War. They even had a vote in Parliament preventing the transiting of our troops thru Turkey along with resupply.

On March 1, 2003, the Turkish parliament rejected a resolution authorizing the deployment of U.S. forces to Turkey to open a northern front in a war against Iraq. The rejection resulted from strains within the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), an inexperienced leadership, competing influences, and the overwhelming opposition of Turkish public opinion.

This was under Bush. The influence of fundamentalist Islam is transforming Turkey from a reliable ally to one that actively opposes many of our initiatives, especially those involving Israel. This predates Obama.

We have lots of quiet “arrangements” with many countries that we do not always agree with. Some of those arrangements are very valuable at times. Just saying.

No doubt. There are no friends, only interests.

The Shi’a make up only 10% of Islam. The vast majority are Sunni. Most of the world’s Shi’a reside in Iran. About 10% of the population of Saudi Arabia are Shi’a with most of them living in the Eastern Province.

When did Turkey become an ally?

I think the message is that once again Obama's incoherent foreign policies and misadventures are destructive of international relations and harm the standing of the US government. Erdogan is surely heading down the islamic trail but he needn't be gratuitously alienated by this arrogant Obama regime.

Turkey joined NATO in 1952. It has been a relatively tentative and conditional partner, especially since the Soviet threat receded.

The alignment with Russia is falling into line with the alignment shown in Bible prophecy.

Turkey was quickly moving away from their reliance on the dollar as the global reserve currency,

That's the troubling part of this.

Turkey has begun to move away from its U.S. alliance and has started seeking increased trade agreements with America's primary adversary Russia.

When I was teaching in Turkey, I learned of something called the "suitcase trade." A Turk would load up a suitcase with some Turkish products, usually leather goods, which were well made and inexpensive in Turkey. He would fly to Russia, sell the goods, and load up the suitcase with Russian-made things, usually hand tools and other small manufactured items. He'd return to Turkey and sell the Russian stuff. Apparently the trade was lucrative enough to cover air fare and other expenses and leave a worthwhile profit. I never did inquire whether the goods were reported at Customs either way.

The flea markets were full of Russian stuff, not only hand tools but bootlegged CDs and copies of Windows.

The Islamists in Russia’s underbelly of former Soviet States will be happy with Erdongan’s “trojan horse” alliance of convenience with Putin.
