The term Cold War is traced back to George Orwells 1945 essay You and the Atomic Bomb. Like Orwells other works, this essay can be called prophetic. In it, he describes what the world would look like if the atomic bomb, although costly and complicated, was accessible to all regimes. He describes countries as living in a perpetual state of cold war with their neighbors in a time of peace with no peace.
The Cold War started immediately after World War II, when former allies began to clash in ideology. In one corner, you had the WWII Western allies, represented by the United States of America. In the other corner, you had the Soviet allies, represented by the USSR. Because of its oppressive ideology, the USSRs rise in power was seen as a threat to democracy and to our national sovereignty. Thus began the weapons race. Thus began the era of peace with no peace.
Although the Cold War is said to have ended in the 80s, the staring contest did not. Both sides fixed their gaze on each other as they figuratively put down their guns. Neither side really stopped the weapons race. And Russia continued (continues) to develop strategic partnerships with Soviet allies, such as Cuba and China, in ways that fortify its stance on the world stage. Over the past few decades, both sides continued to closely watch the other to see who would flinch first.
Now, as the news about the shot-down Malaysian airline unfolds, and speculation about Russias involvement escalates, this is what is on my mind. Will President Obamas stare be as strong as President Kennedys or President Reagans was during critical junctures in the Cold War?

Christine, you were not in the military during those times. There was never a cold war. It was always hot. Ask any veteran who served during those times.
Well, we all know that Putin said the collapse of the soviet scumbag empire was the worst event of the 20th Century. So his goal of reestablishing the empire is what he is about, and frankly it’s what his putinista supporters on FreeRepublic want. They want an anti-American empire to be led by Putin as a persistent enemy of democracy.
its a new cold war
Russia = Capitalism
USA = Socialism
Remember the Cold war was over and then the Liberal Bull, Peace Dividend , BARF
Yes, Putin and his Putinista toadies clearly hate the USA and everything it stands for.
The term is Cold War, why fault any writer or historian for using it’s name, and why go after this female for not being a veteran?
Never ended, the “peace” dividend was a scam just like
global warming. One only has to study the history of
the Soviets to see this type of operation played out
again and again since the inception
I don’t get that either. I’m a veteran, but I don’t think non veterans give up any right to speak on anything. It’s absurd to think that, like Liberals who say only women can discuss abortion.
you could say the same thing for USA
Who attacks females for not being warriors?
People marvel at the vast wealth of Bill Gates, but we all know how he attained those unimaginable amounts of billions of dollars over his 40 years as a computer giant.
What we don’t know is how Putin managed to amass about the same amount of wealth as the famous Microsoft entrepreneur.
Has the US government nationalized the biggest oil company in the country like Putin did in Russia? The entire Russian economy is based on oil and gas and the Kremlin runs it. The US government does not control the US oil and gas industries, or any of the other major US industries either.
Obama only wishes he had as much dictatorial power as the tyrant Putin does.
Soviet communists were known for sending women into combat.
I did not attack her. I was trying to teach her. ;-)
The comment had to do with her not being a veteran, not that she was a woman.
“I dont get that either. Im a veteran, but I dont think non veterans give up any right to speak on anything.”
I was trying to teach her, not attack her. ;-)
Yes, you’re right. Most of the Putinistas on Freerepublic hate Obama but ignore that he wishes he had the power that Putin has. Obama is cut from the same cloth.
I simply do not like the term, “Cold War”. It was, after all, always hot.
If you did not serve during those years then perhaps you can learn something, too! ;-)
