Israel surprised by number, sophistication of Gaza tunnels [UN collaborating with Hamas]

Pictures released by the Israel Defense Forces show tunnels, some primitive and others sophisticated enough to include walls and ladders, running under the border from the Hamas-controlled district before they were intentionally destroyed. More than 60 access shafts leading to 28 tunnels have been uncovered since Israel's ground operation -- dubbed Operation Protective Edge -- began on July 8.

“An IDF force uncovered a terror access shaft in Gaza in which were weapons, maps and IDF uniforms, all intended for the execution of terror attacks against Israel,” said an IDF statement. “In addition, an IDF force attacked several militants emerging from a tunnel opening in the southern Gaza Strip. Since the beginning of the ground operation more than 60 access shafts leading to some 28 tunnels have been uncovered.”

...

The maze of tunnels and access shafts appears to weave its way throughout much of the Gaza Strip. Access points are reportedly found in homes, mosques, public buildings, and more. In the last week, two discoveries of missile caches have been found in UNRWA schools that most likely arrived via tunnel.

...

“The rockets were passed on to the government authorities in Gaza, which is Hamas," a senior Israeli official told the Times of Israel. "In other words, UNRWA handed to Hamas rockets that could well be shot at Israel.”

Wasn’t it posted here a few days ago that Obama had told Israel to stay out of the tunnels and not destroy them? If this is true then Obama is working for HAMAS.

If they would have worked this hard on something productive, they could have built a civilization by now.

Few thoughts. There was never any doubt that Israel would ultimately destroy the offensive capabilities of Hamas in the narrow confines of the Gaza strip. However while Israel has clearly won the battle, strategic vulnerabilities for Israel have been identified.

Hamas is funded and armed by Iran. Iran was keen to study and observe Iron Dome in action. Not only did they learn much about Israel’s defensive capabilities but they now know that Israeli economy can be gravely hurt by missile attacks on its population centers and especially Ben Gurion airport. The missiles fired by Hamas were unguided rockets. If Israel attacks Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, Iran will respond with ballistic missiles fired from Iran, Syria and Lebanon. Modern ballistic missiles not only have sophisticated guidance systems but some are incorporating stealth technology. Will Iron Dome and other Israeli defense systems stop them? If not Israel faces serious devastation which will make an attack on Iran far too costly. Also renegade states like ISIL have the revenue to purchase advanced missiles. They and rogue states or groups now pose a chronic serious threat.

Iran used Hamas and the Palestinians as a pawn gambit. However there is little doubt that the US will be played as chumps. Hamas needs a ceasefire since they have probably depleted their rockets and ammunition. However they won’t agree to one until they get a written guarantee from Kerry for $500 million in “humanitarian and reconstruction aid”.

think about this in cultural terms...the persian/muslim science community has how many patents and doctorates in physics, engineering, electronic design, Nobel prizes in the sciences...

Then compare those with the Jewish community that is literally fighting for it's very survival. They can afford to lose only 1 war. They will cease to exist if the muzzies are succesful. Personally I hope that they (muzzie goat humpers) do develop a nuke and a delivery device. It will make for some really great youtube videos of Iran/Iraq/Pakistan turning to glass.

Many suspect US aid paid for those concrete reinforced tunnels.

Destroying the tunnels is an inconvenience, not a disaster for the Moslems. They are relatively easy to create. The rock is soft like the rock in which the Cu Chi tunnels, a vast system of underground passageways and rooms were cut. Anatolia has a number of extensive underground cities that were cut through that soft rock and it was done fairly quickly.

The problem in Israel they were surprised. Are they trying to look soft. Are they prepared to survive? They need to act as if they knew it all along and are just saying I told you so.

This is a rare opportunity for Israel to take out a serious threat by removing Hamas from Gaza, while Iran is bogged down in Syria and Iraq. At another time, as you point out, it could be Israel fighting on multiple fronts at once, as Iran lobs long range missiles, short range rockets rain from Lebanon, Gaza and the West Bank; and infiltrators flow by the hundreds or thousands through tunnels; and then a nuke or two goes off.

As long as Hamas rules in Gaza, it will remain a threat to Israel, which will greatly complicate any future war. As painful as it is, it is safer to deal with this threat now, than it is to wait to deal with it while engaged in a multi-front war.

Hamas must be deposed, attrited, outlawed and impoverished.

Well the gophers are going to have to dig them all over again.
I’ll bet they lost a lot of their experienced diggers as well as gopher bosses too.
They really are getting an ass kicking

This missile threat is very serious. The newer missiles incorporate stealth technology and will be harder to stop. It will only be a matter of time before ISIL is armed with these missiles if their rogue state takes hold. Israel faces a grave strategic threat on multiple fronts. It might be wise for them to ally with the Russians who are apparently providing material and leadership training to the Iraqis. ISIL’s offensive has been stalled outside of Baghdad, they are overextended and vulnerable to a counterattack.

Well the gophers are going to have to dig them all over again

I'd posited the other day about the fact that both sides in WWI were detecting tunnel digging with the tech at the time.

I just don't get why there isn't the will to do so today.

israel has assets in the US government with other assets throughout the world. I’m thinking that if they completely destroyed the iranian/iraq/pakistan area most of the world would shrug it’s shoulders and wish that more were included.
