Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman was appointed Thursday as acting prime minister following the resignation of Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Ukraine's Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said in his Facebook blog.

“Volodymyr Groysman was appointed acting prime minister at a government meeting,” Avakov said.

Yatsenyuk announced his resignation earlier on Thursday following the collapse of the ruling European Choice coalition in the Ukrainian parliament.

According to Ukrainian constitution, the resignation of Prime Minister must be approved by the parliament. Earlier Thursday, Ukraine’s Svoboda and UDAR parties announced their factions were quitting the majority coalition, paving the way for the dissolution of parliament.

Deputy Prime Minister Groysman, who will now replace Yatsenyuk, also heads the state committee on investigation of the recent Malaysian Boeing plane crash in eastern Ukraine.
