Under Putin, Russia seeing an exodus of ‘ the most educated ... most entrepreneurial people’

... “They are people who have already made money and are now scared to lose it,” Paley said....

“I don’t share the opinion of 90 percent of the country: I feel like a foreigner here now so why not leave?” said Tatiana Konkova, a Russian literature teacher and singer, giving her last concert in Moscow this month....

The number of Russians emigrating in the last two years was some five times higher than in the two before Putin began a new six-year term in May 2012, official figures show....

Echoing the post-Soviet brain drain, sociologists say Russia is bleeding exactly the kind of people it needs to plug a skilled labor shortage and diversify the economy away from reliance on energy exports.

“We are losing the most educated, most active, most entrepreneurial people,” Lev Gudkov, director of the independent Moscow-based Levada Centre pollster. “The Kremlin sees this in a cynical way – as a way to let off steam.”

He estimated that three million Russians have left over the last decade, as many as in the first few years after the Soviet Union collapsed when Russia was in political and economic chaos....

Reasons for leaving vary. Corruption, red tape and allegedly crooked courts are driving the exodus among entrepreneurs. Young people seek higher education and job opportunities. Families want better health care and schools. Some hanker after greater freedoms....

“It’s strange but we have more state officials now than the Soviet administration for a population that is two times smaller,” Gorshkov said....

better stick to Putin than any commie or liberal counterpart

Sounds like our Democratic party and quite a few "Republicans". People naturally prefer capitalism.

It doesn’t matter, their education system is SO MUCH BETTER than ours, they’ll be replaced.

And you don’t have to believe me, just ask ANY Russian immigrant parent here, especially when it comes to math. I know many.

(sorry, again)

“I’m not believing this.”

It certainly does sound like a propaganda offensive. And note how even conservatives are taking the bait now. Very effective.

I still have problems believe what the mainstream media spoon feeds us (especially Reuters), but it’s getting lonely here...

Demographically, the people of Russia are not up to the task of living in the 21st century and no amount of effort by Putin can change that fact. Those that are , are leaving the mass behind.

Russia was given the opportunity but blew it.

China was given the opportunity, the people embraced it and are successfully making the transition from Chicoms to Chicaps

It has corroded much for the last two decades.

Some people are leaving Russia, some of them are decent and some certainly have their good reasons to leave. Anyway, it is compensated by influx of immigrants by large margin.

If Russia was really such a bad place it couldn’t be such a massive magnet for immigrants, second only to the United States in this world.

Just check stats from respective international bodies. US is a #1 place to go, Russia #2, Germany is a (distant)#3. All the rest countries combined aren’t attracting as many foreigners as these three.

Russia is getting a huge influx of muzzies from Central Asia. Moscow streets like those in Paris are now blocked by massed muzzies kneeling at prayer & they demand worship space in Orthodox churches.

I was deployed to Uzbekistan ten years ago. Even then young Uzbeks told me Russia was their window to the West & that nearly a third of the population was in Russia either working or seeking work.

Uzbeks are Muslim but not the worst, tending to be secular, far more so than Afghans whom most Uzbeks despise for their harsh Islam.

Siberia is filling with Chinese but that’s another story.

I could only find statistics from 2006 right now and it says that the largest group were Chinese at 20%; Ukrainians at 16,9%; Uzbekistan at 10,4%, Turkey at 10% (mostly non-Muslim ezidy Kurds), Tajikistan at 9,7%.

Right now I think the number of Chinese have reduced significantly and migration authorities are eager to deport them for any minor violation. There is a zero-tolerance regime for African nationals. As soon as one is unemployed on labor visa or not attending classes on student visa they are getting arrested and deported immediately.
The number of Kirghiz immigrants is growing on the other hand and they are probably the most numerous group of immigrants in Russia right now, after Ukrainians. Visually you won’t tell them from the Chinese but their language is Turkic unless they grew in big cities or around a Russian army bases. These are usually speaking better Russian than Ukrainians or Russian rednecks. The majority are Muslims. The number of Uzbeks is getting lower too, at least visibly. You can see more East European types, mostly Serbs, Montenegrins and Moldovans recently, Central Americans (Cubans, Bolivian).
