Some schools may serve all students free breakfast and lunch

HUMANSVILLE, Mo. - If you've ever tried to concentrate on an empty stomach, you know how much of a relief a new federal school lunch program may be for some families. In some low income areas, every student may be able to eat free breakfast and lunch.

In Humansville, about 90% of the kids that go through the lunch line are already on free or reduced lunches. But the Community Eligibility Provision may now allow all Humansville students to get free breakfast and lunch.

For many in the small town, it's likely a challenge to cover the grocery bill.

"A few years back, there was a company in Humansville that closed, that impacted a lot of our families financially," says Humansville Superintendent Tammy Erwin.

With the percentage of families recieving food stamps or considered homeless, Humansville is easily eligible for the new breakfast and lunch program. 72% are "identified students" for the program, which requires at least 40%.

"It's very exciting. Anything that you can do for your community and your parents," says Erwin.

Humansville parent Sabrina Young says, "I think that would be great, because it helps us as parents. They get good food in the morning to start school with and then get good food at lunch time. And I don't have to worry about where my son's lunch is coming from."

“When I was growing up people were ashamed to be on the government dole.”

***

During the Great Depression, my mother's family was forced to go on “relief” as welfare was called back then. In those days, case workers would make unannounced visits. They would search the whole house looking for anything that would indicate benefits were obtained fraudulently.

One time, Grandma had made my mother a “new” dress out of some old fabric she had around. Grandma really knew how to make even an old burlap sack into a beautiful article of clothing. When the case worker came for his surprise visit, he spied the “new” dress Grandma had made and immediately began grilling her as if she was a criminal. The case worker maintained that this dress had to have been purchased from some high-end dress shop. Eventually, with no proof to back up his claims, the case worker let the matter drop. But my mother always talked about that incident and those surprise visits, and when she did, the anger and humiliation from those years still came through.

Today there are no unannounced visits. EBT cards are sold for drugs. Cash benefits are shot up the arm or poured into a glass or smoked. These people have no shame about taking their benefits and spending them on whatever they feel like, while demanding that government (the taxpayers) give them more. Unfortunately, this president encourages such behavior. A dependent citizenry is far easier to control.

Gotta get those skulls full of mush looking to Uncle Sugar for everything, including their next meal.

And gotta provide those contracts for the food companies that write the big checks to the politicians.

You think those people care where the money comes from to load those EBT cards?

There’s probably a lot of lobbying by the stores to prevent that change. Since EBT is now such a significant % of food sales, it would probably hurt profits.

I think now the biggest proponent of food stamps isn’t poor people or their “advocates” but the farm and grocery lobby.

Most don’t know and they don’t care. Many think there is this infinite supply of money, but should the money run out, the government can always print more.

Wait till the economy crashes and burns. Those people will be in for a rude awakening.

When I was growing up in the fifties and sixties we were poor enough that day before payday was look for change in the couch, and take pop bottles back. My parents always supplied breakfast and lunch for me and my brother.

Ours serves free breakfast to all and free or reduced lunch to half. Perhaps that’s why I’m paying nearly 3 MONTHS of income in property taxes on a small old house on a little lot.

And I don't have to worry about where my son's lunch is coming from.

Because Graybeard58 and other tax payers are paying for it. Graybeard 58 pays for his own family's food.

Bunch of damn'd grifters.

I hate to think how crappy a Mochelle approved breakfast would be.
