Ebola has never been a big international threat, because it kills too quickly to spread efficiently. This is by far the biggest outbreak in history. I wonder if something’s changed, or if is just being managed very poorly by the various governments.

The difference in the past was outbreaks occurred in isolated rural areas, where the infection killed too quickly to spread much. For the first time we are seeing it in a mobile urban population. God help us if someone jumps on plane from Lagos to Ohare with it....

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

Is this the thread to discuss the disproportionate number of dead microbiologists in the last decade? Or would that be the nut job conspiracy ping list?
