Can 'Tennessee's institution' survive Tea Party's wrath?

MARYVILLE, Tenn. — Thirty-six years ago, Lamar Alexander walked across the state in his first successful bid for governor, donning his now-iconic red and black plaid shirt.

Now, the 74 year-old senator is making the trek across Tennessee by bus as he faces what could be his toughest GOP race yet.

Known simply as Lamar around these parts, the former governor, U.S. secretary of Education, two-time presidential candidate and now two-term senator, is undoubtedly an institution. But as the Republican Party nationwide and even in Tennessee has changed, there’s a growing voice that the senator hasn’t and needs to go.

Alexander certainly has the heavy edge heading into the August 7 primary, where he faces six opponents. Chief among them is state Rep. Joe Carr, who’s tried to latch onto the Tea Party fervor to oust the incumbent.

Carr has gotten the endorsements of conservative radio icon Laura Ingraham, who hosted a rally for him in Nashville this week, urging a crowd to retire Alexander like an “old sweater.”

He also netted the backing of former 2008 vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, who wrote that “advocating and voting for amnesty, cash for clunkers, bailouts, raising the debt ceiling, and many controversial Obama administration nominees has marred the incumbent’s record.”

But without significant monetary help from powerful national groups, the challenger’s hopes are unlikely to bring down the muscle Alexander still commands throughout the state.

Cantor was unbeatable, too.

By age 74, if a man’s priorities are not something above being a perpetual congressman, he’s too damn low for the job.

MAYBE he's smart enough to stay where he knows he can actually do something productive. He reached his max, knew it and felt comfortable.

Maybe he likes being away from his wife. Who knows.

A man has got to know his limitations. Dirty Harry

With his LIBERAL record, that alone disqualifies him. Votes 62% dem, is a Oath breaker to the US Constitution and to his promise of 2 terms and out.

Already voted Carr. And Rory Bricco for District 81, the incumbent is a lazy follower not a leader. Rory is a Christian, Constitutionalists both sate and federal. http://www.rorybricco.com/endorsements.php

Mail outs say to vote NO to retain justices Connie Clark, Sharon Lee, and Gary Wade, LIBERALS.

From already voting know RINO halsam is on the ballot, no real opposition, In face he has done little campaign wise he is so sure of re-election. Unless the dem beats him. And I don’t know who that is, as there are no ads on TV about it.

2 8 yrs terms for senate, 2, two year terms for House. If 2 terms is good enough for Governors and President, they are good enough for both state and US congress.

I want this RINO GONE! Can’t keep the oath he swore to the Constitution, can’t keep the oath he made to only serve 2 terms and OUT! Besides his being thad C twin brother voting wise 62% DemORAT!

To much liberalism for me.

If you have not voted yet these 3 LIBERAL judges need to be replaced. Connie Clark, Sharon Lee, Gary Wade. I voted NO to retain any of them. I know nothing about how they think. These 3 like 0’care, and very LIBERAL. They have hired top 0 political operatives to run their campaigns.

I agree. The Senate term is currently six years. Are you suggesting it be changed to eight years?
