NYPD detained men who had pressure cookers to ‘prepare rice’
NY Post ^ | July 26, 2014 | Jamie Schram, Kevin Fasick and Natasha Velez

Posted on 07/26/2014 4:17:33 PM PDT by Innovative

Police detained two men at a Midtown hotel late Friday after a doorman reported they possessed a pair of pressure cookers like those used to make the Boston Marathon bombs.

But the men say it was a misunderstanding: They plan to use the pressure cookers back home to prepare rice, chicken and meat.

Mohammad Alotaibi, 20, and Ayoub Alawadhi, 21, pulled up to the InterContinental Hotel on East 48th Street on Friday evening with the pressure cookers in their car trunk, said law enforcement sources.

They are living in Idaho and are carrying with them pressure cookers when they are going to stay at a fancy hotel in NY. And they just happen to have Muslim names. Article says they are originally from Kuwait.

Yes, you can cook rice in a pressure cooker. It reduces the cook time considerably.

“Lying scum. You don’t cook rice in a pressure cooker.”

I agree with you about the lying scum part, but in fact you do cook non minute rice in a pressure cooker sometimes. If You’ve ever cooked it, it takes a Looonnng time in a sauce pan on a burner.

They are probably not lying, just not telling the entire truth.

1. Cook food.

2. Eat.

3. Make bombs with pressure cookers.

4. Blow up people.

Why buy them on the road. Every state carries them.

And why buy them when you're traveling to NY. Seems like you would buy them on the way back to Idaho.

And why buy them from an Arab store...unless of course they come with shrapnel and detonators and directions.

Anyways, maybe we found a few more guys to keep an eye on.

NYC should charge an import sales tax.

“Lying scum. You don’t cook rice in a pressure cooker.”

That’s by far the best way to cook rice, especially brown and wild rice mixes which take forever to cook conventionally. A pressure cooker also give very repeatable results when cooking any king of rice as it automatically give perfect temperature control.

My wife (MA in Home Economics) said you never cook rice in a pressure cooker. Rice foams up. And if a grain riding the foam gets lodged in the Rocker port, BOOM!!.

Alawadhi said they put the cookers in the back of their car, and drove to
Manhattan for a few days of sightseeing fun. Then they planned to drive back home to Idaho.

Who drives cross country with Pressure cookers in their trunk? Maybe they
thought if they bought them in Idaho they couldn't be traced back.

There are many ways to cook rice and for a different texture you can use a Pressure Cooker.
I use that way when adding hocks to the rice and beans. The Hocks come out tender and flavors
the rice at the same time.

Great, now I'm hungry...

If You’ve ever cooked it, it takes a Looonnng time in a sauce pan on a burner.

Rice cookers made specifically for the job negate the need for a pressure cooker. Done in 20 minutes or less.

Have you ever seen a pressure cooker blow up? That happened to a friend of mine when a grain of rice got in the hole that was there to release the pressure if too much had built up….

This was a long time ago—maybe the new pressure cookers have corrected the problem. (I don’t own one, so I don’t know………..)

20 minutes for white basmati, 35-40 minutes for brown rice.
I guess that’s a relatively long time, if you’re used to eating fast-food or microwaved frozen food.

I don’t buy their story. I was just pointing out that you can cook rice in a pressure cooker.

Most people don’t cook anything in a hotel room, but if you were going to, an electric pressure cooker can be versatile and time saving. Aldi sells an inexpensive model that also works as a slow cooker. If you’re traveling on a tight budget, but still want to eat hearty meals, this would be a good thing to take along. But you would only need one, and you wouldn’t be an Islamic terrorist, and you wouldn’t pack two of them for the lone purpose of cooking rice, so that’s all pretty much irrelevant.

Yes, you do cook rice in a pressure cooker.

However, I highly doubt these two guys went all the way to NYC to buy pressure cookers for actual cooking when they could have ordered them for free delivery on Amazon.

If they’re brand new pressure cookers still in the boxes with receipts showing they were just purchased for a good price, then it’s possible they had legitimate intentions. Not likely, but possible.

If the pressure cookers were not new in the original boxes, there’s zero chance they were intended for anything other than terrorism.

Regardless, it was a very good thing to arrest them and investigate.

I use a Presto that blows a Rubber cork if pressure is to high, straight up instead
of like a seal breach which would be 360-degress out. The old ones were/are dangerous.

That’s what the pressure release gasket is for. If too much pressure builds up, the gasket blows out and the pressure is safely released.

I'm sure they would be cheaper to buy them in ID rather than NYC.

I guess the fireworks were to celebrate next year's Independence Day./sarc

Remember when all those muslims were buying up multiple prepaid cell phones and cried islamophobia when questioned?

Turns out they were ending up in Iraq and Afcrapistan to be used for one time communication then used as an ied remote detonator.

Do they use pressure cookers or rice cookers? The rice cooker I have is from a Korean lady and it just boils it, the lid just sets on top of cooker with no seal, makes perfect rice, very convenient. I guess they also make rice cookers that can steam meat and veggies with the rice too.
