A six-year-old girl watched in horror as police gunned down her one-year-old dog as it stood in their front yard, her family has said.
The girl's mother, Nicole Echlin, said their shepherd-mix Apollo, whom they have had since he was a puppy, got out of their yard in Hometown near Chicago, Illinois on Friday afternoon.
After they chased him around the neighborhood, he returned to the yard and was standing on the lawn when police arrived and pulled out their guns, Echlin told the Chicago Tribune.
'He started showing his teeth - that's when the officer shot him,' Echlin, 27, said. 'I didn't know that was going to happen.'

Still, if the dog isn’t advancing, the police should have asked the family to restrain the dog instead of summary execution.

I accidentally hit the alarm button on my home security system a few years ago. Got a call from the local police dispatcher that there were a couple of cops at my front gate wanting to talk to me to see if everything was OK.
First thing I did was call my neighbor to come to the fence and take my dog into her house.
THEN, I went to the gate to assure the officers all was well and it was a false alarm.
Umm, If I had A Dog like that coming at me with teeth showing I am not sure if I would or would not incapacitate Him/Her...I just don’t know.

The excerpt says nothing about the dog 'coming at him'. The article quotes the girl's mother as saying the dog was not moving when shot.
So where are you getting that?
When your kid gets shot I will replace him with one from Guatemala. That is what you just said.
That would violate the rights of Police Officers to kill whom they choose for any or no reasons.
The kid’s lucky they didn’t shoot her for “making a threatening gesture.”

it’s only a dog. The little girl is going to see much worse than that in her long life.
This is too much of the changing LEO ethos of “serve and protect...yourself first.” And I blame the presence of females and affirmative action hires on the beat for a large portion of it. Unwilling to place themselves in any danger, if at all possible. Call in a SWAT with body armor, automatic weapons, and armored vehicles. Today, any aggressive move by a dog in the presence of a LEO is likely to earn the pooch a bullet.

They will not be reined in. This will escalate until a point is reached that when police come to a door they will always be met by gunfire and police will go nowhere without armor and machine guns. Warrants for arrest will be effectively warrants for execution on sight.
Defying authority = death sentence.
I think that’s the mentality.
