Rancho Mirage is between Palm Desert and Cathedral City on that map....I'd say it's no more than ten miles - maybe less - from the San Andreas.
The only buildings in this entire valley that are taller than four or five stories are the Injun casino hotels....and this could well be that they don't have to adhere to certain codes, being "sovereign nations".

Thunderbird is a gated community with a fantastic golf course.
I was once kicked off of the Thunderbird tennis courts for not having 100% tennis whites (yellow socks). The court was in the middle of nowhere and this ‘Pro’ drove up in a golf cart to eject me. Man it was funny, he was SO serious!

Palm Springs/Rancho Mirage has more homosexuals per square mile
Slight correction...Palm Springs and Cathedral City would be more accurate; Rancho Mirage is more of a 'Hebrew Heights' with tons of wealthy retired Jews. Babs Boxer owns three homes in gated communities there.
