There you have it. The hospital with a gun free policy is praising the actions of a Doctor who was carrying his concealed firearm while at his office. The Doctor’s name is Dr. Lee Silverman, and we are so thrilled to see this response from the hospital:

Post by Mercy Health System.

We are thankful for the swift action of Dr. Lee Silverman, Dr. Jeffrey Dekret, John D’Alonzo and the other colleagues and visitors who took brave and difficult action during yesterday’s tragic event. We extend our condolences to Theresa Hunt’s family, and we are praying for Dr. Silverman’s speedy recovery. We look forward to Dr. Silverman’s return to serving patients at our hospital. We will do all we can to support the victims during this difficult time.

We continue to work with the Delaware County authorities to understand fully the details of the event. We are reviewing our policies and procedures to ensure a safe environment. We are committed to serving as a compassionate and healing presence in our communities, and we are grateful for the outpouring of community support

A man entered the Doctor’s office last Thursday and began firing at people in the immediate area. The Doctor engaged the shooter in his office and exchanged gunfire with him, hitting the shooter multiple times which successfully stopped the madness.

After the scene calmed down, the Police Chief praised the Doctor’s actions as well and stated “without a doubt, I believe the doctor saved lives.”

Glad to see some sanity on this issue. Thought he would have been let go for disregarding the rules.

Yes, I figured it would be worthwhile to let people know about this.

How about you ditch the "no guns" policy?

Doctor Who is a true hero. I hope he can recover from Ebola.

If the doctor had been caught with his weapon the day before, I’ll bet he’d be facing disciplinary charges. He’s only getting off now, because the hospital doesn’t want to be in the awkward position of firing a hero.

The doctor is lucky he wasn’t a pizza delivery guy, or someone at McDonald’s protecting the lives of his customers and co-workers. Then he’d be fired, for sure.

It's not clear that the doctor is a hospital employee -- that he's not in private practice or a contractor covering a mental health clinic. IIRC most psychiatrists maintain private practices, and are paid directly by the patient or by their insurers. A psychiatrist might do some mental health clinic work if they have the time. My cousin is a psychiatrist, and did some part time mental health clinic work until his practice became too busy to allow him to spare the time.

In any case, if a physician is self-employed in private practice, he can only be fired by himself. The hospital medical staff rules are unlikely to regulate firearms, beyond indicating that a physician is expected to comply with all laws and government regulations. (Which he did.) He was unlikely to lose his medical staff privileges. Much more likely that he (and the others that disarmed the shooter) will receive an award for courage at the next annual medical staff meeting.

For a non-physician hospital employee, however, arriving at work with a firearm, even if licensed, might not be advisable.

Agreed.

A “no guns” policy in an attempt to stop crime makes about as much sense as a “no extinguisher” policy to stop fires.

Doctor Who Stopped Shooter...

Oops, I should have read more than the first four words of the headline, lol.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that read both of those headlines and had the same reaction. :)

Good - now delete your "Gun Free Zone" policy because a sign does nothing to ensure anything except that those who obey are unable to defend themselves.

Is it just me or does it seem like people bent on mass murder would tend to not care about silly signs?

When will the hoplophobe morons understand that Gun Free Zones = free fire zones with disarmed victims? Where mass shootings are involved, there were 14.3 victims recorded waiting for the cops to arrive; where an armed citizen engaged the shooter, there were 2.3 victims (stats from 93 mass shootings analyzed in 2012).
