William Murphy set out Sunday night to pick up a few groceries at the New Orleans Food Co-op in the St. Roch neighborhood. The roughly three-block walk is one the 54-year-old home renovator said he's made countless times since moving to the neighborhood in 2006.

But what should have been a routine errand quickly turned into a harrowing encounter with a group of teenagers who left him bloody and battered.

This is a good reason for him to have been packing.

If you go to the site, you can see the SEVERE DAMAGE to him.

To quote the article:

One blow left a clear shoe imprint on his forehead

The pictures that NOLA.com have of the victim show how vicious the perps were.

He was not packing a gun, but this article is a good reason to carry a gun in some neighborhoods and to know how to use it.

He might have needed a large magazine, as it sounded like quite a few teenage hoodlums attacked him.

But what should have been a routine errand

No such thing in that environment.

Let me guess. A roving band of Bible-thumpin', right-wing wacko, Sarah Palin worshippin', Scandanavian Tea Party Dittoheads.

Sorry. If that makes me a racist, so be it.

No, they were well dressed Baptists and Catholics (with suit and Tie and wing tip shoes) coming back from Church. And they had blond hair and blue eyes.

Dang it. That was my second guess.

Either way, they probably looked like children Glenn Beck would've had.

Jonathan Bullington of the Times-Picayune does not provide any description of the criminals and the words “hate crime” also do not appear in his story.

Curious.

It sure sounds like a 6 shot revolver would not have had enough ammo in this case.

I have heard of EDITOR's forcing reporters to have the criminals portrayed of a cruel society...

Reporter might have wanted to, but the EDITOR could have stepped in...

I’m not so sure you need to carry with a large capacity (unless that is your prerogative). One or two .357s to the closest perp and the rest of the cowards will run.

A derringer would probably work, as the others will usually run away when they see one of their fellow thugs get his head blowed off.

The chocolate city at work. I wouldn’t spend a dime in NOLA, had an encounter with the local cops and lying Superdome officials during the UGA-Hawaii Sugar Bowl some years ago. The whole city is a cesspool of corruption and they can have it.

In the past few months, here in the Northeast, we’ve had groups of inner city teenagers, including girls, participating in the “knockout game”. This “game” involves sucker punching an victim (at random, unknown to them) so hard the victim blacks out, with occasional robbery. We’ve even had groups of teens who’ve never met before except via social media, hop a bus, meet somewhere across town to find a victim. These descriptions from the NOLA newspaper sound like it’s going to the next level of violence.

These teens have no fear because there are rarely serious consequences to their actions, at best a year or two of probation, which they ignore.
