Breaking the Impasse on Federal Pay

overnment needs a mediator. The stakeholders virtually all agree the General Schedule (GS) system needs to be replaced but each needs to see something different for the planning to move forward. The July 15 congressional hearings made two key points clear: No one defended the GS system, but no one is ready to take the lead to develop a replacement system. With budget cuts through 2021, government could be stuck with a deteriorating work environment.

Another point is increasingly clear — in the current political climate the GS salary ranges will not be increased by more than a nominal percentage each year. That means federal salaries will fall further and further behind private sector levels. Inevitably this will lead to increased turnover and make recruiting qualified candidates in high demand occupations more difficult. It’s already started....

One good way to return to a rational system is to eliminate executive pay and the perks of the Federal Executive Service. Yes, return EVERY government employee to the GS wage scale. America does not need elite Federal Executives. We ELECT the few we do need.

the day I worry about the poor govt workers is a day that will never come....they are overpaid, get long vacations, wonderful health benefits for the whole family, and they those obscene pensions....

private sector only dreams of what they have..

Here’s a start

Every person labeled ‘senior executive service’ within the VA should be fired.

Not lowered, or hidden, or suspended. Fired for incompetency.

Let the word go out that there are consequences for your actions.

The federal pay scale is compressed. Federal employment pays very, very well through mid management levels. Senior managers and people in a number of technical fields are underpaid. The other issue is tenure; pay senior managers more but make them easier to fire.
