The GOC of the Southern Command, Major General Shlomo Turgeman, gave a detailed update on Operation Protective Edge Wednesday, as Cabinet ministers debate on the future of the operation.
"Fighting against Hamas persists continuously and intensely," Turgeman stated. "We have killed hundreds of Hamas terrorists, dozens of them in terrorist 'special forces.'"
"We have attacked hundreds of safe houses and war rooms, destroyed infrastructure, struck a number of senior commanders of terrorist organizations," he added.
According to Turgeman, the war is progressing well.
"As every day passes, we continue to get closer to achieving our goals - destroying the terror tunnels, both those we knew about and those we are finding in the midst of the operation," he stated. "These tunnels are tens of meters underground."
He noted that at least four tunnels had been destroyed in the last 24 hours alone - and that the IDF is gaining ground.
"We are approaching the completion of the mission," he said, noting that most or all of the tunnels the IDF knew about before launching the operation had been destroyed. "I can promise that we will also destroy all of the tunnels we are finding during the operation."
"This is a significant operational and engineering challenge," he said. "Hamas invested in tunnels what could have built two hospitals, twenty clinics, twenty schools and one hundred kindergartens."
"We managed to destroy four years of Hamas's work in two weeks," he added. "Hamas leaders are now hiding in safe-houses and sensitive areas. Their leaders are hiding in the basements of hospitals."

I hope there is a technology that they can use to prevent tunnels from being used again. Some type of listening device that they can put every 30 meters or so along the length of the border. Or a device that pings down to a sufficient depth. If not, this crap will have to be repeated every year.
Use micro pile drillers and pump slurry into voids found — 2500 lb lean flowable fill is a real hindrance to tunneling.
Why don’t they just start burning tires in front of huge fans blowing smoke into the tunnel openings they found? Since they are connected it wouldn’t take long to find the remainder of the openings!
Or leave the tunnels, add motion detectors & when they go off, burn tires & blow the smoke into the tunnels!
It will never be done. Few days? LOL
You’ll be needing to take action until the end of time.
The main Hamas HQ is a bunker & tunnel complex under the main hospital...that the Israelis built! And the media know about it, but won’t report it. Originally constructed as an evacuation site for the above-ground portion of the hospital when Israel controlled Gaza, the scumbag terrorists now use it for their operations. Question is have the Israelis flushed the rats out of this hidey-hole?
Is that technique viable along the length of the border?
As a preventative measure for future tunnels such would not work as they could break out each hardened concrete drilled or auger cast pile. For an area of existing tunnels or suspected tunnels, they could drill 20” on-center a 6” auger cast pile or drilled pier and pump concrete in. If the drilled shaft had penetrated a void such as a tunnel, pumping slurry down it would take an extra few yard of concrete demonstrating there was a tunnel void and filling it with concrete at the same time.
A drilled shaft 50’ deep 6” in diameter takes a third of a yard of concrete. A cost around a hundred dollars with placement labor. If a 48” by 48” tunnel is encountered that would accept an extra 3 to 5 cubic yards of concrete — a whole truck load, indicating a “hit.”
A thousand foot run of these drilled 20” on-center is 598 holes with a production of 30 a day in shale so your have a cost for a drill rig and crew for four weeks to deal with a thousand foot border area with a high probability. About a hundred thousand dollars plus protective forces, but it is still cheap.
Could you imagine if Israel were to do the same thing though? We would never hear the end of it.
"Hamas invested in tunnels what could have built two hospitals, twenty clinics, twenty schools and one hundred kindergartens. We managed to destroy four years of Hamas's work in two weeks," he added.
