The Israeli army on Saturday informed residents of Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza that it was "safe" to return to their homes, as troops began withdrawing from the area.
"Messages have been conveyed to residents of the northern Gaza Strip that they may return to the Beit Lahiya area," an army statement said, with a spokeswoman indicating the message had been relayed to authorities in the Islamist-ruled enclave.
"They have been informed it is safe for civilians to return to Beit Lahiya and Al-Atatra," the spokeswoman told AFP, in what was understood to be a confirmation that troops had stopped operating there.
Witnesses in Al-Atatra, which is part of Beit Lahiya, reported seeing troops pulling back, in a move mirrored in the south, where residents said the soldiers had withdrawn from villages east of Khan Yunis, close to the Israeli border.
The announcement came amid reports that Israel would not be sending a delegation to truce talks in Cairo, with some suggesting the pullback could signal the start of a unilateral Israeli withdrawal.
The IDF has said it has destroyed nearly all Hamas tunnels, and will complete the destruction of the rest in the coming hours.
Hamas, for its part, has said it will not necessarily be bound by any unilateral Israeli ceasefire.
"If the occupation unilaterally withdraws, the battle field would decide the response. We're not going to be obligated to anything," said Hamas spokesperson Sami Abu Zuhri.

bIBI IS GOING TO BE ON TO MAKE ANNOUNCEMENT.
So what is going to happen with Hadar Goldin..are they going to still search for him..do they have any idea where he might be? Israel doesn’t leave a soldier behind
I think he’s dead. They would be showing him off and bragging about it otherwise.
The reports from Israel right now don’t make a lot of sense.
The rocket fire continues in large numbers, there are still lots of tunnels intact (regardless of Israeli statements), and the Hamas leadership remains untouched.
If Netanyahu is in full retreat mode a day after an Israeli soldier was kidnapped, he is finished politically.
We could be watching a massive deception.
Hardly. He’s trying to *save* himself politically. He has governs from the left. He was never going to finish the job.
Don’t forget there was a massive disagreement between Netanyahu and Obama (as displayed by the phone call transcript).
Finally the ceasefire pressure is gone because of the captured soldier (that happened during the Kerry ceasefire), and Israel is going to retreat anyway?
Hard to believe.
If he’s dead, where is his body? The body just didn’t walk away..it would have been in the same general area where the ambush happened, wouldn’t it? This is the same Hamas who also denied they had anything to do with the kidnapping of the three Israeli teens, yet we know that is a lie..the Hamas leader in Turkey says they ordered it
I hope it is deception. If not then it is just Israel kicking the can down the road a little more, and this time it will only be a very little way down that road.
Polls taken days ago show 87% of Israelis oppose a ceasefire. That number can only be higher following the kidnapping of Hadar Goldin.
Is Netanyahu going to withdraw while the rocket fire continues and abandon the soldier so he can trade him for a 1000 prisoners like Gilad Shalit?
If this is a real withdraw and not a deception he is finished!
Operation Cast Lead was in 2008-9. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Just like the US versus crazed islamic terrorists, the state of Israel is not killing enough of the hamas nutjobs.
This will continue to be an issue until the threat is obliterated.
He’s done much the same before. Remember 2012? Or 1997?
he is on now live....THEY ARE NOT FINISHED DISMANTLING HAMAS,
screw the UN
Demilitarize Gaza and crush Hamas 100%
I had to excerpt the article...but the part not posted says they will still continue searching for him.
Israel needs to finish the job this time....
Just heard the press conference, he will not stop looking for this IDF soldier..the question is where is he, maybe he is being kept in the same place they had the three Israeli teens..but since Gaza is so wide and so many twists and turns he can be anywhere
Is Bibi done speaking? I missed the whole thing...tried to get it up live on fox to view but whatever player they were using didn’t work on my stupid computer. I don’t know if there are transcripts out yet.....can you summarize it for me? please???
Yes he’s done speaking..basically he said that he will everything in his power to get back the IDF soldier who was kidnapped..he also said that this is a very complex, difficult operation and that the majority of the tunnels have already been destroyed and that they will continue to be destroyed..that he has nothing against the citizens of Gaza, that this is all about Hamas and destroying Hamas because Hamas wants to destroy Israel and that he wants peace and quiet for the people of Israel
kk thanks. :-)
Not directed at you, DVSST, but what is with all these keyboard generals around here?
I have absolutely no idea if true or not. I do hope he survives this ordeal, no matter the circumstances.
I am not familiar with Hannibal Protocol..the name itself sounds terrible so not sure if I even want to know..but it doesn’t sound good
