This story apparently took place last month, right after Malaysia flight 17 was shot down over the Russia – Ukraine border area, but we’re only hearing about it now. A United States aircraft – a Boeing RC-135 – was performing reconnaissance of Russian forces when the Russians noticed, began tracking the craft using ground radar and dispatched a fighter jet to intercept it. Complicating the issue is the fact that the US plane took evasive action which included flying into Swedish airspace without getting permission to do so.
Once the crew on board the spy plane realized they were being tracked, they tried their best to get out of the area as soon as possible.
The closest escape from the Russians was in Swedish airspace where they entered without gaining clearance with the country first.
CNN reports that the United States is speaking with Sweden about the fact that they may need to enter Swedish territory in the event the U.S. needs to avoid the Russian military in the future.
The breach of territory was first reported by the Swedish Media outlet DN.se. But Russian officials have not yet replied with their reaction.
‘We acknowledge a U.S. aircraft veered into Swedish airspace and will take active steps to ensure we have properly communicated with Swedish authorities in advance to prevent similar issues before they arise,’ said the U.S. State Department.
This complicates things for the Swedes a bit, as they would no doubt prefer not to have the Russians thinking they were in cahoots on the plan. But with the US acknowledgement of the maneuver and meetings to make sure it doesn’t happen again, we’re probably giving them all the cover they need.

More like the Russians have, well, gone Russian on us.
This is just one day after the Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 crashed down in eastern Ukraine.
Wait our Dear Leader just told us they don't make anything.
That's a huge plane.
Where did it take off from?
Where did it eventually land?
It would need to fly completely across Belarus and Lithuania and the Baltic Sea Russian air space to get into Swedish air space.
I need to see a lot more details before I accept this as factual.
So, I read the second link, at the Daily Mail, and they say the RC-135 was in “international airspace” eavesdropping on the Russians.
Another mystery.
Where do you find international airspace in northeastern Europe?
In the middle of the Baltic Sea, maybe?

Good thing they flew chicken into Swedish airspace: They mighta gotten bumped by a Mig, landed in Russia and given Putin a better gift than the USAF gave China in 2001. /s
U.K.-based RC-135s have flown more than 50 missions in the region since February, sometimes flying over Poland, Lithuania or Latvia and sometimes over the Baltic Sea near Kaliningrad. But according to DN.se, this was the first time that an American plane has reacted to an interception attempt by taking an unauthorized short-cut over Sweden. After overlying (sic) Sweden's largest island, the Rivet Joint turned south into international air space before re-entering Swedish air space near Oland. Violations of Swedish air space occur quite frequently—and sometimes the Swedes send Gripen jets to intercept. There have been at least seven violations in 2014 … and 53 in all since 2009, DN.se reported.
This is not the worst thing to happen to a RJ flight. The media is making a big deal since it was the Russians.
And yes, they fly out of Mildenhall.
