EUREKA, Kan.— Orella Hosack, wearing a “Choose Life” shirt and sitting at the edge of the room at the Copper Kettle restaurant, liked what she was hearing from a tea party candidate challenging the state’s longtime GOP senator.
But she had also heard a potentially alarming rumor — that Milton Wolf, the radiologist trying to unseat Sen. Pat Roberts in Tuesday’s primary, is related to President Obama — and she wanted him to address it.
“If you’ve been paying attention to the campaign, you know there are a lot of vicious personal attacks,” Wolf replied. “I think you deserve to know that one of the things that Pat Roberts says about me is true. Barack Obama and I are actually cousins.”
“First cousins?” someone in the audience shouted with a tone of disbelief.
“Second cousins,” Wolf replied. “Can you believe that? The next Ted Cruz is Barack Obama’s unapologetic conservative cousin.”
Styling himself as an ideological ally to Cruz, the Texas senator, Wolf is the latest tea party insurgent hoping to topple a well-funded Republican incumbent. The outcome of the primary contest between Roberts and Wolf could determine if a state long known for sending moderates to the Senate will take another rightward shift.
The race is among the most colorful in the nation, with a debate not just over Wolf’s family connections but also about X-rays of gunshot wounds posted on Facebook by the radiologist and whether Roberts actually lives in the state he has represented for 33 years.

The TEA Party should vet these people more thoroughly before backing them.
Its the double edged sword of the TEA Party movement....I like that it isn’t overly organized with ‘gatekeepers’ for candidates. But strange candidates can get in.
I like just about everything Wolf says, and Roberts is the exact type of career politician I despise. But Wolf would make an incredibly vulnerable candidate, due to his Facebook posts.
He also has zero experience. Once again, I don’t like career politicians - but a senator with zero experience?
As the saying goes, you can choose your friends, but you can't choose your relatives.
The genealogical facts are that almost anyone who can trace their ancestry back to the pre-1680 American colonies is blood related. And 17% of those have Native American blood, including former President Bush.
The reasons are practical as well as demographic. Before America became a destination for deportation of social undesirables, circa 1680, people came here because they wanted to . . . religious freedom being high on the list.
Our pilgrim forefathers represented an extreme form of Puritanism which encompassed less than 2% of English Society, a nation of roughly 2.9 million in 1620. Do the math. That less than 58,000 people and did not include such mainstream Puritans as Oliver Cromwell and his followers, who controlled England for a decade after 1649.
That's a very small marriage pool among a further subset of people who even came to America and a disproportionate number of them male, a gap which was often filled by native females. Pocahontas, of course, was the most famous example. But she was far from alone.
Native tribes had been warring with their neighbors for centuries before the white man arrived and saw such alliances as useful in gaining access to things such as modern weapons to give them an advantage over their local enemies.
Even here in Colonial Pennsylvania, raids on settlements were as often motivated by the desire to add new members to the tribe as they were for revenge. There are numerous accounts of white captives freed during and after the French and Indian War who went back to their captors.
Pat Roberts has 47 years of experience. It’s the wrong kind of experience, IMO, but if you are looking for experience as a Washington insider in a corrupt political system, he’s your guy.
There's precedent for it in his own family. And unlike his cousin, Wolf has plenty of experience outside of government. We're chocking on government experience.
Funny thing is I was at a noon BBQ in Overland Park with Sen Roberts, Sen Moran and Congressman Yoder. Seems that most of the elected Republican’s in KS both State and Federal support the re-election of Senator Roberts.

Would you really vote for an inexperienced Member of the Obama family for your Senator?
Not “vulnerable” but in KS “venerable”. People there like a friendly incumbent who comes calling at election time.
Roberts defeats Wolf. Cotton you lose and Kansas wins.
Yes, I’m thinking they sometimes portray themselves as ‘know-it-alls.
We need people that get in the mix and find out about candidates.
Rush could tell us all we need to know.
