FREETOWN/MONROVIA - Hundreds of troops deployed in Sierra Leone and Liberia on Monday under an emergency plan to fight the worst outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus, which has killed more than 826 people across West Africa.
Panic among local communities, which have attacked health workers and threatened to burn down isolation wards, prompted regional governments to impose tough measures last week, including the closure of schools and quarantine of the remote forest region hardest hit by the disease.

Long convoys of military trucks ferried troops and medical workers on Monday to Sierra Leone's far east, where the density of cases is highest. Military spokesman Colonel Michael Samoura said the operation, code named Octopus, involved around 750 military personnel.
Troops will gather in the southeastern town of Bo before travelling to isolated communities to implement quarantines, he added. Healthcare workers will be allowed to come and go freely, and the communities will be kept supplied with food.
In neighbouring Liberia, President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and ministers held a crisis meeting on Sunday on putting in place a series of anti-Ebola measures as police contained infected communities in the northern Lofa county.
Police were setting up checkpoints and roadblocks for key entrance and exit points to those infected communities and every resident would be stopped. Nobody would be allowed to exit quarantined communities. Troops were fanning out across Liberia to help to deal with the emergency.

Everyone has full confidence in the military and police of Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Just like that hack from the CDC said, everything's just fine.
And so Obama decided he would send Joe why??
I’m just waiting for when they start bringing non Americans here to treat them.
Just like that hack from the CDC said, everything’s just fine.

The guy wasn’t telling the truth .... either that, or he made some very poor word choices. My take: “lying’. Declaring martial law and deploying the military here with the excuse of an Ebola epidemic: President Obola’s wet dream.
African potentates are now more realistic than the US Prez...?
Apparently so.
This won’t end well in West AFrica.
Mighty smart thinking among the masses. Everyone knows that when you have a deadly contageous disease outbreak you should attack the health care workers and destroy the isolation facilities that help keep the infection from spreading. Some people are just too stupid to live, and they're showing just what actions really stupid people take.
Be more worried about the hordes that bring themselves.
They must be good shots, those viruses are pretty small.
So, murdering health workers and burning down isolation units?
They
Just
Don’t
Learn
I’m not blaming the CDC for the ignorance of these people. Surrounded by Western technology and still haven’t learned. You can’t save people like this and you can’t help them. I just hope this craziness can be isolated and I truly hope that we aren’t stupid enough to allow them to come to the US for treatment. They’re destroying any help we send them.
Look at it from their perspective.
People go in with flu symptoms, come out in ashes. Doctors are supposed to be helping, but are getting sick and running away.
This is a typical human reactions. Adding troops into the mix will mean this bug will amplify. The troops will only stay on station till the first one gets sick, and then the whole group will run.
Men with military weapons running as fast and hard as they can.
We are seeing the start of a epidemic.
When I hear about troops and some horrible disease, all that I can think about is the scene in World War Z where all of the zombies are trying to get over the wall in Jerusalem.
Let’s all hope and pray that the world can come together to quaratine this before this horrible disease attacks and kills more people. I was heartened to hear of the serum that helped the American doc to survive and even turn around - maybe we finally cracked the code.
I can't. Just like I can't look at things from the perspective of a serial killer or any other human abberation. These people don't want help so f*** 'em. save the scarce medical resources for those who appreciate them.
Their perspective is not unreasonable. There are so many other diseases floating around West Africa that if having a fever and sore throat is enough to get you quarrantined, nearly everyone is at risk of getting marched into the quarrantine “death” camp. The government doesn’t have the capacity nor capability to provide patient-to-patient isolation, so if you go in with the flu, you come out in a bag infected with Ebola.
“Troops deploy in Sierra Leone, Liberia to try to stop Ebola spread”
Yeah because the armies of those nations have a great track recored of accomplishing anything outside of coups and terrorizing the population.
What I'm going to state will have me being a supreme *itch, heartless and not understanding the issue.
We've enabled these inept Africans. They wanted Europeans out of Africa and to self-govern, and that's what should've happened. Now, medical professionals and Peace Corp are pulling out and they probably don't have natives who know how to stop the epidemic from spreading. I think it is wrong for the western workers who took on a responsibility that wasn't there's to leave when the need is the greatest.
It's a miracle that a major pandemic hasn't come out of warn-torn areas and refugee camps and across our border with the hordes of young people without parental or community guidance.
And this "reassure the public" stuff? It's time for a reality check. Ebola has changed into something that spreads more easily and spreads to medical professionals who are taking what used to be adequate precautions. There is NO WAY the ptb know what's going on. They're playing Russian Roulette with one of the bullets potentially being a pandemic that sends global civiliization back to the Middle Ages.
Even if that doesn't happen, what they're doing, bringing Ebola out of Africa, is a beyond dumb idea.
Well, you have an arrogant leadeeship in the nation. As the old saying goes, pride cometh before destruction.
Africa has managed to end each outbreak of Ebola since 1976 so far, that is why after 38 years the death toll has only reached close to 1600.
Well, we let bleeding hearts convince our government to send in troops, endless money, and other stuff that Africans should have been building on their own. We never at any point said to them “this is independence, get used to it” and stupid celebrities hold endless fundraisers to take care of them.
I admire your statement.
We have given trillions and this is our reward, more mistrust.
