The White House was forging ahead Monday with a three-day Washington summit inviting delegations from nearly 50 African countries, despite growing fears about the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus.
Administration officials say they are taking additional precautions to screen visitors for the disease in both Africa and the United States. Despite some leaders canceling plans to attend due to the outbreak, President Obama made clear last week that the summit would go on.
"It is going to be an unprecedented gathering of African leaders," Obama said Friday.
The high-profile summit in the nation's capital is meant to tackle issues ranging from food security to Africa's business climate to terrorism. It follows on Obama's trip to Africa last summer.
But the surging outbreak of Ebola in West Africa raised questions about whether the summit should even go forward. Already, the presidents of Liberia and Sierra Leone have canceled.
Obama and government health officials, though, emphasized that they could keep to the agenda, with the proper precautions.
The government is "taking the necessary steps domestically to protect the American people," an administration official said in the run-up to the summit.

What could go wrong?
Obama will be SO BUSY that will miss all the meetings
Biden will go, if he gets infected they will test their serum on him as he is the “Royal Taste Tester” of the regime....
A whole BUNCH'a white folks paraphrasin' THAT one.
“The government is “taking the necessary steps domestically to protect the American people,”
Yeah... the same government that cannot prevent six year olds from crossing the border.
Barry was scared stuff that the KENYAN Premier....would greet him in a manner that would blow his cover...
Don’t worry, Bambi won’t be anywhere near them.
The leaders are not likely to have been contaminated, but Third World big cheeses always travel with huge retinues (just like Obama!), and that’s what I’d be worried about.
“It is going to be an unprecedented gathering of
predeceased African leaders,” Obama said Friday.
What madness, let’s just gather all of Africa together,
one big ebola family.
If any of them carry the virus back the US will be
cursed by a whole continent.
Here we have Obama afraid to say no for fear of
losing face with his peeps...sickening.
My granddaughter arrived back in Ghana yesterday to begin her third year teaching 4th graders at an international Christian Day school. With Obama at the wheel you are right WHAT COULD GO WRONG? Every thing than will. Granddaughter is not safe anywhere. I set the Angel’s over her everyday.
Sadly, Americans that travel anywhere out of our country for any reason are taking their life in their own hands.
The Ebola outbreak, when it happens in the US can be found to have originated in DC.
It’s “fairness” after all...
Sounds like more racism to me.
Obama and government health officials, though, emphasized that they could keep to the agenda
From the CDC's perspective, he said the most important thing is to "stop problems at the source." He said: "And the source here is in Africa.
And that's where it needs to be stopped, not on US soil.
will undergo screening in their country of departure and additional screening in the U.S
We keep hearing about this screening but aren't being told exactly what. IOW, they'll be asked if they have ebola and when they say, "no", they'll be passed through.
