Michelle Obama isnít banning bake sales, birthday cake

“Put Down the Cupcake: New Ban Hits School Bake Sales” a Wall Street Journal headline warned. The Daily Caller blamed the first lady: “Michelle Obama’s Meddling In School Lunches Now Causes BAKE SALE BANS.”

But no, the government isn’t waging a war on brownies. School bake sales haven’t been banned as some recent headlines have suggested. Nor does little Johnny have to bring carrot sticks instead of cupcakes to share with classmates on his birthday.

New rules requiring healthier foods in public schools took effect July 1 as a result of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act passed in 2010. They set nutrition standards for all food and drink sold during the school day, including “competitive foods” — government language for vending machine snacks and bake-sale goodies.

The standards, which dictate how much fat and sugar food sold on school grounds can contain, do extend to snacks sold as fundraisers. That raised the hackles of some state school superintendents, including John Barge of Georgia, who called the rules an “absolute overreach of the federal government.”

Nice try, WaPo.

Guess we should follow your consistently inane logic and blame W, eh?

The MSM - for when your low grades will not get you any other job.

She has no office, she has no power, she has no authority

Isn’t pretending to be a government official a crime?

I was wondering the same thing. What law empowers this sad, angry creature to 'ban' anything?

While we can all debate how many cupcakes we should eat, it is a huge step to say the federal government will regulate your local school bake sale.

Things like this could be huge campaign issues for the GOP. Democrats are in favor of micro managing our lives, while true conservatives are in favor of personal responsibility and personal freedoms. In this case, conservatives would take the position that your local school officials and PTA will decide what products to sell at their bake sales.

Sounds like common sense to me. But let’s get out there and make the case for conservative principles as they apply to situations such as this.

FREEKING DITTOES TO THAT!!!!!

If it is good for our children while they are in school (ie. Wards of the State), it is good for the Welfare people (ie. Wards of the State)...

Also apply same standards to the capital hill cafeteria too.

yes, you can do a bake sale, but with spinach tofu cassarole and Sugar free carboard muffins made with 30% post consumer content....

If I ran a school I would have a high fat/sugar bake sale every damned single month to replace all federal funding just to spite her meddling arse...

Not at all. They wanted to unionize the school lunch room, federalise the programs and incrementally bring the federal government into local schools. It is about control. It is about your money. It is about forcing themselves into the most intimate details of every persons life so they can force us to live like they want, do what they want and do it when they want any time they want.
