Vladimir Putin is the EU's 'recruiting sergeant', says Boris Johnson

Russia's increasingly aggressive actions on the borders of eastern Europe are acting as a "recruiting-sergeant for Brussels", said Boris Johnson.

Writing in the The Telegraph, Mr Johnson said that Russia’s annexation of Crimea and support for separatists in Ukraine were helping to bind countries like Poland more tightly into the European Union.

The London Mayor’s comments came after David Cameron raised concerns that Russia was planning to put similar pressure on European Union countries on the eastern fringes of the Continent like Romania.

The Prime Minister said that if the UK “stood back and did nothing tomorrow they would be destablising countries in the Baltic states, destabilising Romania, the neighbours of Russia will start to feel the pressure of what Putin is doing”.

Writing in TheTelegraph, Mr Johnson said: “The modern Poles look at Russia today, they look at Vladimir Putin – and of course they want to bury themselves as deeply as possible in the comforting bosom of a German-led Europe.

“That is not the end of the argument, of course. We Eurosceptics can point out to Poland that EU security guarantees are pretty worthless, and that ultimately protection will come from Nato and from America.

“We can observe that in the end, within 10 years, the EU cheques will stop coming in, and that they may eventually feel differently about the anti-democratic elements of the EU system.

LOL--it truly would be funny if Putin pulls a Gorbo.

We'd be collecting FR Borscht Brigade and Paultard tears by the bucketful.

???

So instead of being controlled by Moscow, these nations are opting for the EUSSR with a side of German economic domination.

Some choice!

Well they’ve seen how Putin treats the states he wants to dominate, like Georgia and Ukraine. He sends murderous thugs to invade them and massacre their people. On the other hand the EU has never invaded any other country.

Your implied question indicates what a crappy alternative being controlled by Moscow actually would be.

We Euroskeptics...

Boris Johnson must be channeling Bill Clinton when he calls himself a 'euroskeptic' while endorsing the policies of David Cameron.

One doesn’t need an army to invade a nation. That’s all very messy 20th century stuff.

You only need to hold multiple votes (as many as it takes) until those nations submit themselves to EU overlordship, Or bait others with the prospect of being able to tap into the wealth of better nations and achieve economic “stability”.

And just try to leave once you are in.

Who can blame them for preferring the EU’s bribes to Russia's threats?
