As for 1990, I think about 95% of Russians, including tired cold warriors had a highly positive perception of the United States. Just think about it. What has changed?

I’m sure you believe that. I’m sure you are one of his worshipers. You probably have a shrine to him and posters of him without his shirt on plastered to your wall.

Buchanan blames Poland for World War II.

What mostly changed is Putin started trying to reestablish the old Russian empire, bullying Russia’s neighboring countries, killing journalists and opposition leaders in Russian, and in effect returning Russian to its brutal benighted past.

We are talking about ordinary people.

Yes, ordinary Russians approve of having an autocrat rule them. They don’t like to think for themselves. They buy into all of the paranoid fantasies about Mother Russia being under siege. They see their invasion of Poland in 1941 as Poland’s fault. They see the Katyn Massacre as Poland’s fault. They see the times when they starved the Ukrainians in 1933 as Ukraine’s fault. Pretty much an ignorant and backward worldview.

How can you know what one thinks about?

How can Putin be so popular if Russians care about their own liberty? They’ve made a deal to trade liberty for chauvinism, Russian chauvinism, and national hubris. You don’t have to be mind reader to see that this is true. They’re cool with the former KGB man, much to their shame and disgrace.
