While I agree with your sentiment, geography indicates that in order to help the Kurds, we need to go through one of those states. If we openly support full nationhood for the Kurds, none of those states will cooperate.

Not quite. Hanabusa is giving up her U.S. House seat to run against Schatz (sp with an i) for the U.S. Senate seat he now holds. He was appointed to fill the seat by Governor Evercrummy (sp) when Sen. Dan Inoue died. Inoue had wanted Hanabusa to succeed him.
The election is tomorrow.
