A medical examiner has ruled the recent death of former White House press secretary James Brady, who was wounded in the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan, a homicide, raising the possibility John Hinckley Jr. could be charged with murder.

Members of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch, the United States Attorney’s Office, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are reviewing the case, according to a police press release issued Friday.

Huh. So then if I die when I hit 73, does that mean the VC who shot me finally got a confirmed kill?

IIRC, a victim must die within a year and a day in order for the death to be ruled a murder.

Depends on the state.

Only if the reason you died was related to the bullet.

Interesting. Why are they focusing on James Brady, as if I have to ask, Pres. Reagan has already died and and he took a bullet from Hinckley. Intent was certainly demonstrated.

In California there is sort of a statute of limitation if the death is not immediate.

“194. To make the killing either murder or manslaughter, it is not requisite that the party die within three years and a day after the stroke received or the cause of death administered. If death occurs beyond the time of three years and a day, there shall be a rebuttable presumption that the killing was not criminal. The prosecution shall bear the burden of overcoming this presumption. In the computation of time, the whole of the day on which the act was done shall be reckoned the first.”

This is at the state level though. Apparently the federal level is variable if you are Sarah Brady and you lose your stage prop.

I sort of doubt that James Brady died any earlier than he normally would have - he was overweight all those years ago. I think they’re reaching for their own agenda.

Chances are, I most likely will die earlier than most thanks to that VC bullet - tends to to throw off blood clots periodically. I count each new day as a gift.

Until I hear more, I’m going to assume the media overreacted to a technical term in the autopsy. I’ll bet this goes away.

I think it will be hard to prove a proximate cause for the death.

73 is not exactly young.

And I'll wager that his death was natural, not related to the bullet in any way.

O/T a bit, but:

There have been convictions for murder when a person isn't even physically harmed.

As in a violent robbery and the shopkeeper has a fatal heart attack, due to the stress.

If he died from an infected pressure ulcer, or a deep vein thrombosis leading to a pulmonary embolism, or pneumonia because of limited lung expansion, you might make the case that the crippling injury he suffered was the cause of his death.

I’m fine with this.

Don’t try to assassinate or kill someone, and you’ll never have to worry about it.

James Brady suffered greatly before he died. The shooter deserves to suffer now.

Mrs. Brady will turn this into a cash cow....now that she doesn’t have him to exploit.
