Poland asks US to import apples banned by Russia

Poland has asked the United States to open its market quickly to Polish apples banned by Russia in a sanctions war over the crisis in Ukraine.

Poland's ambassador to Washington, Ryszard Schnepf, said he had met Michael Scuse, a senior official in the US Department of Agriculture, about the steps needed to open up the US market, the Polish press agency PAP reported.

"We are interested in a quick decision because the situation is extraordinary," Schnepf was quoted as saying.

"He told us to begin the procedure. We have a new meeting planned for August 18 with the heads of the agency that allows for the entry of agriculture products to the United States," he said.

"There is a greater understanding on account of the fact that the United States has also been hit by Russian sanctions," he added.

The United States severely restricts imports of fresh fruit and vegetables from the European Union, including EU member Poland, PAP said.

Why doesn't Poland sell its apples to other members of its own trade bloc, isn't that the purpose of belonging to it?

I hope they’re doing better up north and in the Northwest that we’re doing here. With the super cold spring me trees didn’t even blossom which means zero apples.

Yeah. Some estimates are 60% of our consumption. China is gladly supplying a good share of the rest.

China’s providing 40% of our apples? There’s something with that in the land of Johhny Appleseed.

That’s the advantages of regionally diversifying crops. It gives better odds.

There were virtually no Michigan apples in 2012 due to drought but last year they were picking unripe apples and cutting limbs off trees to prevent them from breaking under the weight of all the apples.

Sounds like a job for Common Core.

The local growers used to mostly ship their apples to, believe it or not, England.

I heard that figure but don’t know if that’s correct. What they are doing is supplying a huge amount of the apple based additives like sweeteners and purees that are increasingly used in products.

I am fairly certain that apples are grown in Poland, but we can sell them some.

If they were smart the Poles would be bartering their apples for Norwegian salmon or Belgian peaches, two other products hit by the Russian sanctions. Although I'm quite sure that type of entrepreneurship is verboten by the faceless bureaucrats in Brussels.

Two years ago I actually filled the back of my F-250 with apples from ONE of our trees. Last year I had ZERO apples from that same tree and this year less than a small basket full. Wish I had some of those Polish apples.

Anyone ever taste apple wine?

Eat your own damn apples!!!

It’s wrong, it’s stupid, therefore the government will surely acquiesce immediately
