NYTimes Grudgingly Admits Tea Party Winning Immigration Fight
breitbart.com ^ | 8/13/14

The New York Times yesterday featured a story about how the Tea Party has influenced the GOP on immigration: "On Capitol Hill, the Tea Party wing continues to drive the party’s agenda. Last winter, as House Republican leaders drafted their 'principles' for immigration overhaul, they largely disregarded the opponents of any form of legal status for immigrants in the country illegally, dismissing them as a loud but small minority.”

Niger Innis, the executive director of TheTeaParty.net, the nation’s largest grassroots tea party organization and convener of regular Tea Party caucus events on Capitol Hill, issued the following statement:

What we’re seeing here is Tea Party 2.0. It’s a maturation of the movement. We are influencing the debate inside Congress. It’s true that not all of the Tea Party candidates won their primaries around the country this electoral season, but in every case they made the incumbents more conservative. We see that on immigration and the stance the entire Republican leadership has taken in disavowing an open-borders, amnesty-for-all approach they were considering a year ago. Last fall we launched our Secure America Now petition and have collected more than 128,000 signatures demanding that before we tackle any attempt at immigration reform we secure our borders first. It worked. We’ve won the debate. And it’s gratifying to see the New York Times acknowledge it.

Just my opinion, but the national “Tea Party” groups have gotten too close to the Republican machine. Tea Party Express, for example. I support only local Tea Party groups like San Antonio Tea Party, and I support individual people that I like and individual action groups like Judicial Watch, Institute for Justice, etc. It is difficult to tell the real groups from the front groups, but try to find the ones that are not afraid to post an independent thought, one that might not be approved by the Republican Establishment, and choose groups that are actually getting stuff done (winning lawsuits, getting documents released using the Freedom of Information Act, etc).

Serious question, can an Article V Convention be used to reign in politicians, judges, government officials, who willingly defy the Constitution

Yes, absolutely! An Article V Convention can allow us to pass an amendment that will allow us to recall judges, overturn their decisions, etc. I am pushing for a Convention of States resolution here in Texas.

Thanks for your remarks. It becomes very confusing.

Re Judicial Watch: The husband sends them money, but it seems like they sell our names to too many other organizations.

I did not know that Niger Innis is one of us. I’ve been a fan of him and his dad for many years.

It’s not a tea party issue, it’s an American issue, something which these elitist up in the north east cannot understand.

... and the diseases and pests they’re bringing along for the ride ... don’t forget about that “hot button” that may prove to be hot enough for the American people to understand just how “big a deal” the failure to secure our borders is.

I noticed 1 of the Connecticut candidates took the FAIR pledge.

The average performance has been better. Especially the last 2 Senate primaries.

The terrible incumbents are getting 60% or less, ie. McConnell, Tillis, Rounds, Cornyn, Cochran and Lamar.

Conservatives: Risch got 80%, Scott got 90%, Inhofe got 87%.

http://fivethirtyeight.com/datalab/republicans-have-more-reason-than-ever-to-worry-about-primary-challenges/

In fact, the average share of the primary vote received by Republican incumbent senators so far this year is 73 percent. Not only is that lower than 2004 through 2008, when incumbents averaged 89 percent of the vote — it’s also lower than 2010 and 2012, the years when the tea party was supposedly in ascendency, when GOP incumbents got an average of 78 percent.

I would probably support Niger’s group. But truthfully, I think we are all better off giving directly to candidates. Some Tea Party groups have disappointed.

Florida State Surgeon General Letter to HHS Regarding Unaccompanied Children—issued by Florida Dept of Health / FR posted by Politico2isBack

July 18, 2014

TO: Sylvia Mathews Burwell
Secretary U.S. Department of HHS
200 Independence Avenue, S.W.
Washington, DC 20201

TO: Craig Fugate
Administrator Federal Emergency Management Agency
U.S. Department of Homeland Security
500 C Street SW
Washington, DC 20472

Secretary Burwell and Administrator Fugate:

The Florida Department of Health has received unconfirmed reports that the federal government is bringing unaccompanied minors from the border to Florida today. On July 17, we received unconfirmed information that dozens of children were being brought by plane into Miami on Friday.

This same day, ABC news reported that “the federal government is so overwhelmed by the current tide of migrants crossing the border it cannot provide basic medical screening to all of these children before transporting them, often by air, to longer-term holding facilities across the country.” (Feds Struggling to Cope with Medical ‘Breakdown’ at the Border, ABC News, July 17, 2014.)

Specifically, ABC News reported that your Health and Human Services Department’s Director of Refugee Health said you,
“identified a breakdown of the medical screening processes.” This breakdown was described in the news report as “a systemic failure of the handoff of these children between Customs Border Protection (CBP) and Health and Human Services (HHS).”

If these reports are accurate, this “systemic failure” in the federal system is extremely worrisome. In order to fulfill my duties as Florida’s State Surgeon General, I am asking you to immediately provide the below information. This information is urgently needed to guard the health and safety of Florida communities across our state and is vital to the well-being of those children from the border who may have come through the flawed federal system.

• Will you notify the Florida Department of Health immediately of any current or future unaccompanied minors coming to, or placed in, Florida, including their current location?

• Are you conducting health screenings both at the border and again at the time the children are placed in shelters?

• What medical services, if any, were provided to any children placed in Florida?

• Do you have any records of infectious diseases associated with the children currently in federal care in Florida?

• Have any of the children been hospitalized in Florida with fevers accompanying their illnesses? If so, where are they being treated?

Because of the urgency of this request, this letter is being immediately emailed and faxed to you. I expect a prompt response to my request for information on existing unaccompanied minors in Florida and would like to stress the importance of future timely communications.

Sincerely,

John H. Armstrong, MD,
FACS State Surgeon General
Secretary, Florida Department of Health

If Judicial Watch does that, it would be disappointing because they do good work, filing Freedom of Information Requests to get the truth out there. But I guess nothing is without drawbacks.
