How foreign aid exacerbates instability around the world

According to Kofi Annan, “right up to March 1994 reports were still being written by international development agencies, praising Rwanda as an unusual success story.” This was also the view of the aid worker Peter Uvin who writes in his book Aiding Violence that the country “was usually seen as a model of development in Africa, with good performance on most indicators of development.” Development aid poured in from most western countries. Hundreds of millions of pounds worth of “development” was followed by 6 weeks of genocide with a rate of death that exceeded that of the Nazi extermination camps. Tony Vaux of Oxfam admits in his book The Selfish Altruist that “Many of the killers had participated in aid projects- they were the same people we believed in and with whom we worked. They were ‘partners’.”

On a similar side, I knew a guy that was trying to start a garment company in Liberia. Mostly selling to locals and his business was doing OK. The problem was that he had to compete against American churches that were sending clothing by the container load that was given out free to the people.

He eventually had to close the doors. Sometimes, what feels like the right thing is not the right thing.

IMHO Foreign Aid is an international version of bribery.

The US gives a foreign aid - money, food, weapons, in an attempt to sway a foreign government’s stance on an issue.

How successful has that been?

Helping a nation build its infrastructure with strict controls to prevent the siphoning off money and material is one thing. But, outright grants with no restrictions?

the meme that is far too often played is that the poor africans cannot do anything for themselves, and that the ‘rich’ countries have to provide for them. it is racist and demeaning and perpetuates poverty and dependence.

a couple of expressions come to mind, and not just the one abotu giving a fish vs. teaching how....the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and killing with kindness, for example
