A six-year police veteran named Darren Wilson was identified Friday as the officer who shot and killed an unarmed black teenager in a St. Louis suburb last weekend, touching off a week of sometimes violent protests and a military-style police response.

A police report made public Friday also revealed that the teen, Michael Brown, was suspected of stealing a box of cigars from a convenience store and assaulting a clerk minutes before the officer shot him to death.

Read the police report

Thomas Jackson, the police chief of Ferguson, Missouri, said later that the officer did not know Brown was a suspect in the robbery when he stopped Brown. Asked why Brown and a friend were stopped, the chief said: “Because they were walking down the middle of the street blocking traffic.”

The chief described Wilson, 28, as a distinguished policeman and a “gentle, quiet man” who was devastated by what happened. Wilson has been a policeman for six years, including on the Ferguson force. The chief declined to say where Wilson was or what security precautions had been taken for him....

I have seen numerous reports the officer is an African-American.

I get so tired of the "unarmed" meme.

There were 726 homicides committed in 2011 with hands, fists and feet.

"distinguished policeman and a “gentle, quiet man”

There are plenty of FReepers ready to hang this guy.

I like to ask what would you do if a 290# 6'4" hood started beating your face and head and then try to disarm you?

As for me I give him the gun, but bullets first and I wouldn't worry to much as to where they went into him.

Since I’m 6 foot, 340lbs, probably laugh at him.

Many considered my Daddy a big man at 6’2” 225-250, but there came a day my Daddy started carrying saying “I am to old to take an ass whoopen!”

“Unarmed” but not “unthreatening”.

Attempting to intimidate a sworn law officer armed with deadly weapon at the ready is challenging fate. Probably even more dangerous than train-dodging.

The kid was daring “suicide by cop”.

Interesting stuff in the police report:

http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/i/MSNBC/Sections/NEWS/Ferguson.pdf

Dorian Johnson says he hid, then ran after the shooting. He also previously said no one has interviewed him.

The police report says that he was interviewed at the scene and that he gave the name Michael Brown.

I’ve seen no verifiably accurate reports.

There is a Darren Wilson in the St Louis PD and another in the SC State Police. Their pics have been posted here, but they are not the officer involved in this.

Why does everyone keep referring to MB as a “kid” or “child”? 18 years old qualifies him as a “man” in my book and solidifies his ability to either serve his country in the military or go to the big boys slammer if needed. JMHO

I think MSNBC refers to him as a cherub

Even calling him a “teenager” is misleading. The guy is, or was, eighteen, legally an adult. When I think of a teenager, I’m thinking a 14 or 15 year-old smart mouth.

Don’t know if this is true, but I saw on another thread that there is a black policeman with the same name, but the shooter is not that black man.

I guess that's a new politically correct way to say "fat"?
