Underdogs seek late surge in 3-way GOP Senate race to take on vulnerable Alaska Dem

A trio of Republican candidates in Alaska is battling to the finish for the shot to take on one of this year’s most vulnerable Senate Democrats – but polls indicate the two underdogs in the race will need a late surge to topple the front-runner, former state attorney general Dan Sullivan.

The three candidates are facing off in Tuesday’s Senate GOP primary; the winner will face Democratic Sen. Mark Begich in the fall.

Sullivan, who is also a Marine reservist and former commissioner in the Department of Natural Resources, is leading the small pack in the eleventh hour. He’s got the most money -- having raised $4 million with $204,000 still in the bank -- and he’s leading in the few major polls conducted over the summer.

But his two competitors are nevertheless well-known: Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell and Tea Party favorite Joe Miller, whose campaign got a shot in the arm on Friday when ex-governor Sarah Palin endorsed him, saying he has the “guts, wisdom, experience and optimism to fight for what is right.”

One of the most recent polls, taken at the beginning of the month by Public Policy Polling, found Sullivan leading with 35 percent, to Treadwell’s 29 percent and Miller’s 20 percent.

Another indicator is Sullivan’s fundraising support, particularly from heavy-hitters in the party -- Sullivan got a big infusion of more than $300,000 from Karl Rove’s super PAC American Crossroads, and has the backing from Washington movers like the Club for Growth. Meanwhile, Begich has already gone out of his way to attack Sullivan exclusively, signaling that his own internal polling is showing Sullivan as the man to beat if he has any chance of keeping his seat in November.

But the race is tight enough that nothing is inevitable

Sullivan, the Establishment candidate will prolly pull this off when the polls close 2 hours from now. I like Joe Miller, but, does anyone think he could defeat Begich? He kinda carries the stigma of a loser. I wonder why Sarah waited until Friday before the Primary to endorse him. Huckabee (gag me) just endorsed him yesterday. Whassup with that?

I still think this is gonna be the “big one that got away” from the GOP this year. While these 3 guys were cutting each other to pieces in the Primary, Begich has been raising money and running a stellar campaign. Karl Rove and Mitch McConnell will be very sad.

Here is my take on it: Alaska has a very lucrative oil pipeline, which exports precious fuel to the Lower Forty-eight states. And it also exports some of that oil to European, Asian and African countries. If a “global warmist” moonbat gets in control, he will do everything in his newly-acquired power to shut it down. Do you want to live with roaming blackouts and food shortages, like they do in the Third World? Think about it. Everything in our American culture relies on Oil. Our food distribution system relies on tanker trucks that use Oil. Plastic, which is part of our everyday lives, is a by-product of Oil. Your clothes, the water bottle you’re drinking out of, even the keyboard that you’re typing on right now. All of that is possible because of Oil. And solar shields and wind farms will never take its place. All that $#!+ does is kill birds. Do you really want some global warmist moonbat to control the energy coming out of Alaska, of all places?

I voted for Joe Miller, hands down the most conservative of the three. Treadwell would have been my next choice, Sullivan is a RINO.

Why are you asking me that question? Who the hell is the global warming moonbat? Are you talking about Sullivan. He’s and establishment RINO. I’m no fan, or supporter, of him.

An after thought: Are you talking about Begich? I’m no fan of his and I’m no DemocRAT, but, I think he might pull it off. It’s difficult to beat and incumbent and he’s running hard.
