Israel Confirms Air Strike Targeted Hamas Military Chief

An Israeli diplomatic source confirmed Wednesday morning to Walla! that Israel tried overnight to eliminate Mohammed Deif, the head of Hamas's "military wing," the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades.

Hamas has claimed that five bunker-buster bombs were fired by Israel targeting the elusive mastermind behind Hamas's terror war.

"The wife of the great leader (Deif) was martyred with his daughter," wrote Hamas leader Moussa Abu Marzouk on his Facebook page Tuesday night, not indicating the fate of Deif himself.

Hamas emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra later modified the appraisal, saying Deif's second wife Widad (27) and seven-month-old son Ali were killed in the strike, in addition to an unidentified man.

While Deif's condition is currently unknown, local health officials quoted by Reuters likewise said three people were killed in a strike on a house in Gaza City, including a child and a woman, possibly Deif's wife and son. The third death was not identified, leaving speculation open that the IAF may in fact have hit its mark.

That speculation was given extra room later when al-Qudra revised the toll down to just the wife and son, without explaining why, reports AFP

Interior Minister Gideon Sa'ar (Likud) commented on the latest attempt to end Deif's life; the terrorist leader has until now evaded five IDF assassination attempts, losing both of his legs in one airstrike.

Deif "is exactly like (former Al Qaeda leader Osama) Bin Laden," appraised Sa'ar, speaking to Galei Tzahal (IDF Radio). "This is an arch-murderer. Where there is an operational opportunity to eliminate him - it must be taken."

Sa'ar called for the Cairo truce talks to end, after the Israeli delegation was pulled Tuesday following the ceasefire breach.

"You can achieve quiet through a war of attrition, and you can achieve it through a ground operation into Gaza City,"

The normal and natural response to the death of innocents like a wife and child is sadness and remorse. But, given the fact that Osama’s brides attacked our Spec Forces and defended the murderer and the fact that Muslim youth are raised to hate America, Israel, Jews and to love bloody, murderous jihad are there any innocents? It’s a sick situation, utterly sick.

I wonder if Gazans had spent the last eight years building their economy based on economic liberty would they really want Israeli land back?

5 Bunker Busters??? Come on HAMAS, you can do better than that! The Israelis MAY have used one but they are saving them for Iran.
Why waste a perfectly good Bunker Buster on a house or apartment building when a 2 ton bomb is enough?

Can you imagine an American Lefty saying this?: Opposition leader and Labor Chairperson Yitzhak Herzog had a different take on Israel's path forward, saying that while military strikes were justified, Israel should still continue to pursue diplomatic channels.

"We are in an additional round of conflict. Certainly Israel must take off the gloves and give the required blow to bring Hamas back to the process of truce talks, as I think the talks need to be an international platform and not just a negotiation in Cairo," stated the leftist MK.

Deif became the head of Hamas military wing 12 years ago when Israel killed his predecessor, Salah Shehade.

Hamas initial reaction about an hour later was to bombard Israel with rockets while claiming Israel “opened the gates of hell” by unsuccessfully targeting Deif.

However it could be a Hamas announcement on his death is still to come.

Deif survived 5 prior Israeli assassination attempts and is known as the “the cat with nine lives”.

They knew they wanted a woman and a child to die, but it took several hours to decide which wife and which child to kill off and blame on Israel?

Hamas was established in 1987 during the first intifada by 6 cofounders.

Israel has since killed 5 of them, with Mahmoud al-Zahar being the only remaining cofounder still at large.

Hamas is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood.

The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in Egypt way back in 1928 by Hassan al-Banna.

Deif was arrested by Israel in 1989 but released more than a year later. He was also arrested by the PA in 2000.

"The normal and natural response to the death of innocents like a wife and child is sadness and remorse."

This might sound cruel and cold hearted but collateral damage occurs in war. How many innocents died on 9/11? How many in Hiroshima? Hamburg?

War is hell. Before this is over, whole populations will be decimated, if not eliminated. Many, many innocents will die. Gaza is just the prelude.

I get civilian casualties in war (and we are and have been at war with Islam for a long time), but my point is in some of these cases are there really any innocents? Maybe little kids. Have you seen this?:

It’s probably taking this long to recover the bodies
because they were deep underground.
Bunker Busters aren’t wasted on just houses.

Deif has been at the top of Israel’s most wanted list since 1996.

Still awaiting word on his fate.

Last time Israel had a kill of this magnitude was Imad Mugniyah (Hezbollah chief of operations), who like Deif was constantly on the move and in disguise.

Mugniyah was killed by a Mossad car bomb in Damascus 6 years ago.

I read that the Israeli Air Force hit the house with 5, one-ton bombs just to make sure Deif did not walk away from this one as well. Holy sh*t, that's a lot of ordnance for one man to handle, no? I think they got him because HAMAS then issued a statement saying that the Israelis have opened the “Gates of Hell”...blah, blah, blah...

They usually refer to the “Gates of Hell” when they're really angry about something!
