Glenn Grothman is a fiery conservative who wants to slash welfare programs and crack down on illegal immigrants who he says will "destroy" America. And if U.S. House Speaker John Boehner wants to keep his job next year, he had better be sure Grothman and his fellow House of Representatives newcomers are happy.
Grothman, the expected winner in a tight Republican primary for the right to succeed 73-year-old Representative Thomas Petri in Wisconsin, is one of more than a dozen vocal conservatives gunning to replace more moderate or pragmatic retiring House Republicans in November's midterm elections.
Their arrival could mean even more headaches for Boehner, who has struggled in recent years to keep his fractious caucus together on critical battles over tax and spending bills, and most recently on legislation to secure border funding.
A further shift to the right in the House, continuing a trend that began with the Tea Party's surge in 2010, could signal another round of high-stakes political showdowns early in the new year and ultimately threaten Boehner's leadership.
One of the first votes the new House conservatives will face in March will be on raising the federal debt limit -- a topic that already has produced two grinding partisan battles that rattled financial markets and threatened U.S. credit ratings.
With Republicans now holding 234 House seats, it takes only 17 Republican "no" votes to sink legislation without Democratic support, giving the growing conservative bloc immense clout in legislative negotiations.
"It's going to be very difficult, if not impossible, for the next speaker to get to 218 without Democratic votes," said James Thurber, a political scientist at American University, referring to the majority needed to pass legislation in the House.

Obviously he has a plan to get to 218 with Democrat votes and he’s been executing it for years.
Past time to give Boner something to cry about!
A further shift to the right in the House,
When is the last time you read of a democrat being labelled a "fiery leftist" or a "fiery ultra-liberal" or a "fiery socialist"?
As moderate voices wane? Are they kidding? Have conservatives forced him to cut spending? Have they forced him to defund Obamacare? The House is infested with moderates who are in charge and not in any way inclined to take conservative positions on the biggest, most critical issue of our time — cutting back government.
RINOs are on notice.
Glenn is a rational reactionary - as are most genuine conservatives. He will argue his point in effective debate, respectful in counterpoint, and is anything but haywire. But being firm on his convictions drives the local liberals crazy, and so they create another bogeyman to hurl insults and invective at, and avoid debating or discussing the outcomes of their policies - since in doing so they let the cat out of the bag that Glenn is right and they are wrong on the issues.

Fiery conservative, slash welfare, destroy America. When did Newsmax start hiring reporters from the New York Times.
You forgot racist.
Time to clean house.
Good. We will need many, many more such people in order to return America from the commie takeover that has occurred. If flaccid, feckless boner can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. What a jerk.
They used to call Hubert Humphrey the Happy Warrior.
It’s a damn shame, making these poor GOPE leaders show their lack of gonads on a daily basis.
Too bad we are not in ancient Rome these GOPE things would have made good eunuchs. They came pre-cut or did it themselves to fit in with the other nutless cowards they run with.
Newxmax had Renee Ellers on one week before the NC primary. Jd Hayworth started with,”You are facing a man...” and I thought he was going to talk about the primary against Frank Roche and the amnesty issue. But instead they mentioned Clay Aiken.
I think they act nice to some people like Norquist to get them to re appear.
Grothman will be good as a person to man the watchtowers 24/7 since he’s not married and doesn’t have to rush home. Keep an eye out for Boehner trying to sneak something.
