Iran Sends Tanks Into Iraq to Fight Islamists (US M-60s)

As American jets flew top cover, in mid-August Kurdish Peshmerga militia and Iraqi special forces troops recaptured the strategic Mosul Dam from Islamic State militants. Meanwhile Iraqi Golden Brigade commandos liberated parts of Tikrit from the Islamists.

But the militants counterattacked—and that drew Iran into the fighting. In a move that could have far-reaching consequences, Tehran has sent tanks into northern Iraq.

Looks like Iran is sending in elements of an armored division composed of US M-60s form the Shah era into Iraqi Kurdistan to fight ISIS.

Maybe they just want to grab a little piece of Iraq for themselves.

This is the start, if its true.

All along, I have been writing that we (the west) have been waiting for Iran to come across the border. They are Shia and will be next on the ISIS hit list.

The Iranians are not fans of the US, but they are a western style army and will kick the crap out of ISIS.

1960’s M-60s vs modern anti-tank weapons - should be interesting - until ISIS figures out how to run the M1A1s they got from Iraq ... or maybe some of the Sunni trained to use the US tanks have gone over to ISIS.

They might be able to figure out how to drive the M1A1. However, how can they maintain them? They might be able to cannibalize parts for a while but they don't have the expertise to repair or refurbish. What about ammunition?

Those M1A1's will become stationary soon.

All this crap could have been avoided if the Zero Admin would have left a small contingent of USA military in striking place in Iraq. They could have crushed ISIS before they got a foothold in Iraq. Now with Iran getting involved its all fluxed up even more.

See how tht goes...
My, non-tanker, opinion is that this could turn out bad for the Iranians if ISIS captured any decent number of M1 Abrams (which I thought I heard they did) Desert storm proved that M1’s can destroy arbitrarily large numbers of T-72s and an M60 isn’t a whole much better than a T-72. Hopefully, that only works with real American tank crews.

Yes, they will have to stay behind the lines quite a way. But they are decent mobile artillery, well....at least better than they had before.

We have the weapons to destroy this ISIS roach invasion but instead are using the fly swatters on a few here and there. General Patton would know what to do and then get it done.

The Kurds need all the help they can get. If you scroll down past the article there is another story about Kurdish made tanks. They are modified vans, trucks and construction equipment. The homemade tanks look comical but are probably death traps.

Iranians are civilized. ISIS is like something pure evil out of Star Wars. The civilized world is going to have to unite to disintegrate ISIS....and that’ll have to include a lot of people we’re not supposed to like.

The Islamic Swine forces have some Russian tanks in addition to Abrams. We don’t know how many are ex-Iraq Army and were trained by the US.

They may also have some moslem brotherhood volunteers from Egypt with experience on the 1100 plus Egyptian Abrams.

Iranians have mostly supported the Kurds in Iraqi Kurdistan against Arabs during wars - Iran-Iraq war is another example. Iraqi Kurds used to cross the border into Iran to get medical treatment too. Their interests dictate it, even as Kurds are sunnis. But an interesting point is during iran-iraq war the shia arabs in Iran fought on Iran’s side whereas shia arabs in Iraq fought on Iraq’s.
