Skip to comments.Politico: Obama to Limit Campaigning to 'States Where He's Still Popular'...

A Friday afternoon dispatch at the Politico from Carrie Budoff Brown and Jennifer Epstein tells us that "The White House is putting the finishing touches on a post-Labor Day schedule that will send the president to states where hes still popular."
The list of states where the Politico pair alleges that's the case is quite short: "Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Illinois and California." That's it. Obama, in a situation resembling that of Richard Nixon in the final months of his presidency, when "Tricky Dick" was mocked for being able to find friendly audiences in just a few Southern states, is apparently toxic everywhere else, just in time for midterm elections. Moreover, it didn't take much research to show that the Politico's pair's claim Obama is "still popular" in most of those five states is either false or shaky especially after considering that such polls are all too often overloaded with Democrat and liberal respondents.
Quinnipiacs most recent poll finds that just 44% of Pennsylvanians approve of the way President Obama is handling his job while 53% disapprove.
Though slightly higher than February approval rating of 42% released by Quinnipiac, Obamas approval rating seems to be stagnating at low levels.
Even if Obama has gotten back to above the break-even level in the Keystone State, which is highly unlikely, the statement that he is "still popular" there would be false, because he clearly wasn't popular during the year's first five months.
On to Wisconsin. As of six weeks ago, via the Associated Press:
President Barack Obamas approval rating is almost unchanged in Wisconsin, with 46 percent of registered voters saying they approve of the job hes doing.
A Marquette University law school poll released Wednesday says 47 percent disapprove of his performance, and 4 percent dont know.
Illinois? Here's what Lynn Sweet at the Chicago Sun-Times wrote in late April:
A new Washington Post/ABC News poll put President Barack Obama's approval ratings at a new low with voters prefering Republicans controlling Congress for the last two years of his second term. The poll helps explains why, in the two big Chicago area House contests it would not be surprising to find Democratic Reps. Bill Foster and Brad Schneider distancing themselves from the White House they certainly did during the sequestation as their Republican challengers, state Sen. Darlene Senger and former Rep. Bob Dold make the case for checks and balances in Congress.
Illinois is really two states. One is Chicago and some of its inner-ring suburbs. The other is "everywhere else." Obama is overwhelmingly popular in Chicago, and mostly toxic, as Sweet exemplified, "everywhere else."
Now to California, where the President should still be a runaway fave. Well, he's got the upper hand, but by nowhere near as much as one might think via the AP in June:
President Obama Still Enjoying Higher Approval Ratings In California Than Most Other States
A new Field Poll finds that half of all Californians approve of the job President Barack Obama is doing, a sharp contrast with his lower approval ratings in the rest of the country.
... Field says public opinion of Obama has remained steady in California over the last year. Half of those polled said they approve, 39 percent disapprove and 11 percent had no opinion.
So just half approve of Obama in a state he carried by 23 points in 2012.
Finally, let's go to Michigan. I could not find anything recent, but this item from December paints the landscape:
PPP Poll: Obama Hurting Democrats in Michigan Races
The Republican candidates for governor and senator in Michigan have made strong gains in a new poll as Democrats continue to feel the backlash over the botched rollout of President Barack Obama's signature healthcare reform law.
... "Democrats who looked a few months ago to be favorites for governor and Senate in Michigan are now on the ropes, casualties of the dip in favor of the Democrats around the country over the Affordable Care Act," says the poll.
PPP is considered a left-leaning polling firm. Anyone who believes that Obamacare has faded as a relevant issue just because the press isn't talking about it, or that Obama's standing in the Wolverine State has somehow improved, is sadly mistaken.
Politico's breezy assumption that Obama is presumptively popular in four of the five states they identified doesn't hold up. Imagine how bad things would look in these pollis if some of them didn't have skewed samples.
Notably absent from the list: Oregon, where Obama would until recentaly have been a shoo-in to help the Democrats' cause, and where there is a competitive U.S. Senate race. But apparently the Beaver State is not on Obama's campaign agenda. I wonder why?
Good grief, Wisconsin. Look at the Marquette poll. Can you believe that 4% of the population DON”T KNOW whether Obama is doing a good job? And where did they get the 46% who approve the O man? Out of a bar?
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
Where’s he’s still popular? Like Yemen, Iran, Iraq and France?
Are there retarded States?
I wouldn’t exactly call him Mr Popularity here in Michigan either.
That’s always been his way, even when the states that don’t like him are going through floods and multi-acre wild fires, Obama stays away. He is only ‘president’ if you approve of his every word, deed or lack thereof. Obama likes not to be questioned by a mere voter.
must be those 7 imaginary states.
Just wait till one of 0bama's "dreamer criminal aliens" that invaded through the southwest, blows up a city, then even the pothead states will be searching for a rope!
Now it’ll make it easier to see where all the idiots live.
Make it the last seven of the “57.”
send the punk ass faggy dork here to Florida where I can heckle his sorry ass and make fun of his wife’s enormous ass.
This PROVES 2012 vote fraud got him elected.
You can run, but you can’t hide.
He'd better stick to Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and PSU at State College.
George Wallace accurately described the Keystone State as "Philidelphia and Pittsburgh with Alabama in between".
Some of us--in the good "red" part of the state--call it Pennsyltucky.
Oh, he could go to some others, like Maryland or Delaware; it’s just there’s no need to, the Republican Party has ceased to exist.
It’s a bell curve.
WHO LOVES OBAMA?
Indonesia, Mexico, IS, N. Korea, Qatar, Turkey
and the hated EXEMPT in Congress who sold out
the US Constitution for their EXEMPTIONS.
If Baraq and I were on separate sides of a street and he caught fire, I would not cross the street to p!ss on him. Even if I were all, “wee wee’d up.”
‘States Where He’s Still Popular’
That rules out 50 states. The administration is working full time to locate the other 7 states and make sure they have golf courses.
“Are there retarded states?”
Yes. They’re called Blue States.
I guess we’re going to see a lot of him here in Massachusetts
Must be those seven extra states he visited on his 57 state campaign tour
You beat me to it JohnBrowdie.
So he can go anywhere he wants in Rhode Island and Washington D. C.
As a resident of WI, I heartily disagree that he’s popular.
He’s poop-ular, but not popular. Worst 8 years ever, worst (fake) president in history.
The link goes to Newsbusters
So...Clown Prince nobama will only travel to moozlum countries?
Using “ass” 3 times in one sentence is a bit redundant.
(I am now ducking to avoid thrown fruit and other items that I deserve to be ducking from)
The Islamic State is the only one that leaps to mind.
Ha, ha, he already lost the governor his seat in Hawaii (a blowout vote against him), and almost the Senator as well, but there there more successfully rigged the race
Wisconsin is like Illinois. Dane, Milwaukee and a few northeastern Minnesota-bordering counties think he’s all that and a bag of chips.
The rest of us think he stinks!
New York, Kalifornia and .....New York and Kalifornia.
Damn Man, I like your style!
‘Northwestern.’ I know which was MN is, LOL!
The Pharoh is popular with ISIS.
I’m sure he’s popular in Dearbornistan, MI.
If that’s the case it looks like he’ll be spending a lot more time on vacation overseas.
“The list of states where the Politico pair alleges that’s the case is quite short: “Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Illinois and California.”
Detoilet perhaps, but NOT Michigan!
No, he didn’t make it in NY
I guess that would mean the State of Confusion, State of Defeat, State of Stupdity, Catatonic State...
Actually had someone who supported him say she was worried and upset that he was doing such a terrible job.
However, she will continue to vote Dem.
A coward’s strategy. He’s ceded ground to the enemy. Almost never a good idea.
I’m not sure he’s all that popular in Detroit. At least not popular enough to get people out to vote for Peters without Obama on the ballot.
Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo are his strongholds.
There is just no way anyone is giving this clown anything in the 40s. Soetoro will be lucky to poll in the teens..
So that narrows it down to Vermont....
As I recall, near the end of his Presidency, Richard Nixon made a trip to Bad Axe, Michigan.
Let me guess...EBT card? Government paycheck recipient?
I guess I'm more caring than you are. I would eagerly cross the street to perform said service, LOL.
The states where “Obama” is still popular should be expelled from the Union, so they can form the Communist-Sharia State they really want.
Ass, ass, ass, Obama.
I dunno, seems fine to me.
“The White House is putting the finishing touches on a post-Labor Day schedule that will send the president to states where hes still popular.”
Just another reason that makes him ineligible to LEAD. Whatever shall he do when the few who haven’t caught on to his BS, have their moment? Maybe he can go to the remaining 7-out-of-57 states that he claims we have and campaign himself there, leaving the REAL world to real-world things.
