Banning chocolate milk backfires
Cornell Chronicle ^ | APRIL 16, 2014 | BY MELISSA OSGOOD

Posted on 08/30/2014 7:34:07 PM PDT by Behind Liberal Lines

To some, banning chocolate milk from elementary schools seemed like a good idea, but new Cornell University research shows that removing chocolate milk from school menus has negative consequences.

“When schools ban chocolate milk, we found it usually backfires. On average, milk sales drop by 10 percent, 29 percent of white milk gets thrown out, and participation in the school lunch program may also decrease,” reports Andrew Hanks, lead author and research associate Cornell’s Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management. “This is probably not what parents wanted to see.”

The Cornell study, which included professors David Just and Brian Wansink was published today in PLOS ONE; it examined what happened when chocolate milk was banned in a sample of Oregon elementary school. It shows what happens when chocolate milk-loving kids are suddenly confronted with something paler – and proposes what researchers hope can be a healthful compromise.

“Members of the school district’s PTA were adamantly opposed to offering chocolate milk in the cafeterias, claiming it was as bad as soda,” said Hanks. “While this policy does eliminate the added sugar in chocolate milk, it also introduces a new set of nutritional and economic consequences. Children typically don’t choose foods for health, but rather for taste.”

Nutritionally, after the milk substitution, students consumed less sugar and fewer calories; however, they also consumed less protein and calcium.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Mmmmm . . . 14 oz. of whole milk, chilled to 39 degrees in a tall glass mixed with two slightly heaping teaspoons of Nestle’s Quik. None of that syrupy 2% slop they have in the convenience store coolers, which is hardly better than Yoo-hoo.

There is no reason why chocolate milk can’t be every bit as nutritious (if not more so) than 2%. It is simply that in lib think if the kids like it then it must be bad for them.

Screw homeschooling.

I'm paying a significant amount of my tax dollars to fund the public school system. I'd rather fight to reclaim the schools. Homeschooling is giving up.

Homeschooling is the only thing that’s going to save this country.

I have watched whole communities try to take on the school board over sex ed curriculum that should NEVER have made it into the school in the first place, and the school board totally ignored everyone, even the superintendent and did what it wanted anyway.

You might as well be trying to save the Titanic.

Public schools are such an abysmal failure that they deserve to crash and burn. And homeschoolers certainly can and do vote and try to reclaim the public schools, but it’s not going to be done by sending your kids to the public schools. It’s going to be done at the voting booth and getting on the school board.

I don’t like paying school taxes either, but there’s simply nothing that can be done about that.

But no way in hell am I going to sacrifice my children on the altar of liberalism by sending them to have their minds laid waste by a public education.

I’ll bet liberal socialists never feed their kids a glass of chocolate milk at home. Of course not, they don’t have kids. They abort them. So, your kids better not drink it because some government liberal with an affirmative action arts degree in voodoo nutrition or psychology has decided it is bad for YOU and YOUR family.

Wake up America and smell the coffee, or chocolate milk, whichever you prefer.

So is Katy Perry.

Not that there's anything wrong with either Perry or Tebow. They both have enjoyed a great level of success.

Plus the Conservative Christian Bob Jones University provides wonderful, God-centered material for home schooling.

I wouldn't have my two sons come within miles of anything that had Bob Jones' name on it. That university is a laughingstock.

No. I pay for the schools. I'm going to use them. And I'm going to do what I can to fix them.

One can do both, we did. Fruitless. The places are nut houses run by the inmates. I wanted to scream many times.

We are entitled to as much say in the schools as those with kids there. According to my property tax bill.

But my experience tells me that the public school system needs to be gutted and started over. 75% or more of the teachers and administrators need to be axed. That isn’t going to happen.

I think we disagree...albeit in a FRiendly way since Conservatives don't march in lockstep as do leftists. One of my pipedreams is that liberal indoctrination centers like Harvard, Cal. MIT and Princeton become branches of good schools such as Bob Jones, Liberty and Hillsdale. Sure, it's unlikely to ever happen but those universities would then teach the values that make America.

Michelle Obama, who knows absolutely nothing about pediatric nutrition, got it all wrong. Most children are very active, and they need carbohydrates because they burn a lot of energy. And older children and teenagers need protein, especially when they engage in sports (or cheerleading, swimming, bike riding, after-school basketball, etc.)
The bean sprouts, tofu and soy burgers that she tried to force our schoolchildren to eat just got thrown away, a tremendous waste. The kids would rather sneak off and buy a candy bar than to eat that vomit-flavored Obamaslop.

The researcher should have tried whole milk. Maybe if they would leave the fat in, kids would like it better.

After jogging in the desert, I come back and drink 12 oz of water. About 15-30 minutes later, 8-10 oz of whole milk. It works great. Water can follow after that is absorbed.

We don’t need added sugars in chocolate milk, but we can use the fat in milk.

No it's not. In addition to providing a critical competitor to the public monolith, it's building a mass-customized market in pedagogies perfectly suited to a voucher based educational system.

Milk did me a lot of damage by teen years because I was lactose intolerant by then. Biologically we are supposed to stop consuming milk as we transition to adulthood though some people do have a genetic mutation that allows them to process raw milk better. I am not one of those mutants, sadly.

“But no way in hell am I going to sacrifice my children on the altar of liberalism by sending them to have their minds laid waste by a public education.”

This is what I did. I taught my children about our great country. They attended weekly religious services, they learned to play a musical instrument, they played competitive sports.

I taught them to think for themselves and not to be taken in by group think. I taught them what it means to be a good citizen, how to give back to their community and be respectful of their parents, teachers, peers.

They both went to very liberal public schools. On several occasions, I spent mornings in the principal’s office, with teachers and guidance counselors, having them explain to me the curriculum.as I present proof of fallacies in the text books.

Both of my kids are now attending very liberal colleges. Neither one is in a liberal arts program.

If there is one thing I learned from all of this is, if you do right in the home, your kids will do right in their lives. No liberal will ever take that away from our children as hard as they may try.
