Russia's President Vladimir Putin has toughened his position on the Ukraine conflict. The only solution he will now entertain is "statehood" for eastern Ukraine. Autonomy and federalization are now off the table.

And that's his response to the latest EU ultimatum. Russia has just raised the ante.

This will result in many Putin-gasms by the growing number of Putin lovers on this forum.

I believe “statehood” and “Federalization” means the same thing in this case. Autonomy is included under that umbrella.

The fact Brussels gave Moscow a week’s grace is why no one takes the EU seriously.

Why a week? If I was Putin, I’d be rolling on the floor in laughter.

That used to be the Russian position. I think we’re at a point where autonomy/federalism is too little too late and the only outcome is Novorussian independence, attainable if Kiev’s forces can be expelled west of the Dnieper.

There is no reason for Moscow to settle less than for a client state in the east of Ukraine.

From Merkel’s article and Russia’s info, it appears that they’re on the same page.

Putin is wise to take advantage of an America under siege by the attempted coup of Obama al-Husseini. He can do whatever he wants without consequence.

There is nothing but sanctions or symbolic acts to deal with a nuclear weapons country (Russia) in this situation.

That’s been the bipartisan foreign policy of the US since WW II.

In 1956 Eisenhower was busy working with the Soviets against Israel, Britain and France during the Suez Crisis and not using any military force as the Soviets crushed the Hungarian revolt.

The tone of Republicans would be tougher than Obama, but there would be no actions that would lead to war with Russia.

We FReepers saw this coming at the start of this crisis, and Commsiar Vald just proved it.

We will end up with a "East/West Ukraine" Scenario.

The Russians will want everything East of the Dnieper River.

However, know that a full annexation of the entire Ukraine would Really REALLY freak people out, Putin will get with Ubama and the E.U. and Compromise that if he can have Eastern and Southern Ukraine than he is okay with Volhynia, Podolia, and Galicia forming West Ukraine and joining the E.U.

Because Compromise is what it is all about right?

Hey putin ... you and your military are woosies!

Yep! Russian soldiers haven't even gone through LGBT sensitivity training. How are they supposed to fight?

Russian soldiers who do things like drink, brawl and draw pictures of guns in school will be no match in their own back yard against our warriors, battle-hardened by "time out" cards in bootcamp and equipped with the latest tools to combat discrimination, sexual assualt and homophobia. We're gonna march right through those Russkie woosies!

Be assured, if WW3 starts, I'll be attending. I've got five more years left on my contract.

You said the Russian army are wussies. How so?

Meanwhile, lets look at the social experiment that has transformed our military over the past two decades. Lets look at the emasculation of the American boy over the past two decades where we've drugged them up with Adderall, suspended them from school, made playtime as safe and supervised as possible and now lament that too many of our boys are too fat to enlist.

We mourn the loss of a 5,000+ combat deaths in nearly 13 years of fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, treating each one as a national tragedy. We go toe-to-toe against the Russians in their own back yard and we'll lose twice that many in the first day.

You think America is ready to send our young men and women into a meat grinder? Over east Ukraine? Oh, I forgot. Russian soldiers are wussies.

Putin doesn't want a war. And it's a moot point because there isn't going to be one. Vladimir Putin is the most powerful man in the world right now (a position previously held by every U.S. President since 1945). He's going to get what he wants.

He'll continue to support the separatists, while denying it and the West will continue to issue toothless sanctions that don't affect their ability to buy much-needed Russian oil.

Eventually the fighting will stop. Western Ukrainians are already getting war-weary, tired of being told their sons are fine despite not receiving letters or phone calls in weeks. Ukraine will split in two with Donetsk the new capitol of Novorussiya. If Putin plays his cards right, he'll have a pro-Kremlin government in Kiev as well.

The West has no appetite for all-out war with Russia.

You’re sure in a giddy mood today. Is it full statehood under Putin’s dominance or just partial statehood under the beloved Putin? One waits with bated breath to know the latest victories of the shirtless avenger of all that is pernicious and not Putin Orthodox Christian.
