Pot-infused edibles are trickling onto shelves at marijuana stores, and more products are coming, despite a shortage of legal pot and new last-minute state regulations. Entrepreneurs have bemoaned the slow pace, but regulators are being cautious about public health.
Statewide pot-supply shortages slowed edibles’ arrival, but manufacturers also were stifled, and frustrated, by emergency regulations from the state Liquor Control Board (LCB), which has taken a cautious approach to opening the marketplace.
So far, the LCB has given its blessing to products — including chocolate bars, sodas and energy shots — from three new businesses.
Nine more kitchens have been approved by the Washington Department of Agriculture, but the LCB hasn’t yet signed off on their products.
Although eager entrepreneurs have bemoaned the LCB’s pace, Washington has benefited from watching Colorado deal with unexpected concerns and high demand for edibles. It also avoided national scrutiny after media seized on cautionary tales about edibles. New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd visited Colorado, ate marijuana candy, and wrote that it left her in an eight-hour “hallucinatory state” in which she was “panting and paranoid.”

I do not support marijuana use.
That said:
1. Pot is not liquor.
2. The only reasonable regulation of anything is accuracy in labeling and purity of product. In other words, it is what it says it is.
I believe that when one is in their upper seventies, it affects one differently.
Just reading this gives me the “Munchies”.

and now I have to worry that some idiot will bring weed browniew to work or a party, or it'll get served to my grandchildren or even adult children...

I think people should be able to ingest whatever they want, and bear the consequences.
This does not mean I - or anyone - has to pay someone else’s way because they can’t get out of bed and get a job.
Nor does it mean that someone who sneaks an intoxicant into my food or beverage hasn’t committed a crime.

Couldn't they have done that before? The sales volume of legal cannabis products in WA is a tiny blip compared to black market.

I’m confused.
I’m 38 and have smoked it in the past. I no longer care for it because it only made me manic (I have bipolar disorder) and it warped my mind too much.
I also have asthma and damned near coughed to death. It was scary because I could not catch my breath. I took a really big hit by accident so I was pretty far gone. The more you cough the higher you get.
At any rate, that woman was profoundly stupid for eating a cookie that was made with pot. From what I understand it can be similar to dropping acid because of the major psychedelic effect. No way in hell should someone eat a cookie if they’re unfamiliar with pot.
I was in Denver last week and ventured into a pot shop and talked a bit with the locals. The shop was very professional, clean, and I saw mainly older, upper class clients coming in. It was very orderly, checking ID and explaining the rules and purchase limits for out of towners. Very little has changed beyond smelling it being smoked in the bars and the locals had no negative responses. People weren’t just walking around stoned and going all reefer maddness, nor was anyone trying to get children high.
There were some people outside my hotel smoking so I joined and talked for an hour or two. They were much more calm, reserved, and collected compared to the drunks at the hotel bar. The drinkers were an embarrassing mess and far more wasted than the folks smoking high grade hash.
The neighborhood kids here (Virginia) will love your heartwarming anecdote. While the old men stumble around after splitting a 24 pack they go somewhere quiet and smoke. Doesn't just slowly destroy their brain, but destroys society. People who sell drugs are scumbags, whether or not the drugs are "legal".

That is changing as legal sets in, as will enforcement of "illegal." In addition, many more will now use because the stigma of "illegal" being removed. More stupid and zoned-out users/drivers etc. will be prevalent in WA state and Colorado.
Unsubstantiated claim.
Actually, around my area in WA, the prevailing observation is that those who already use are continuing to use, those who don't aren't, and a few old fogies are getting back into it. The shop is seeing next to no customers who have never used before.
You left out younger kids who will now use because of availability, and “acceptability” with a law that legalizes it. Unsubstantiated, yes, but we will see...
