Russian jets buzz Canadian frigate near Ukraine

Sources say three Russian aircraft flew low over HMCS Toronto on Sunday. Two of the Russian planes were SU-24 fighter jets and the third was a slower AN-26 surveillance aircraft, a source said.

“We expect this,” the military source said. “They’re going to play cat and mouse with us for as long as we’re there.”

At least one of the Russian planes came within 300 metres of HMCS Toronto, a government source said.

HMCS Toronto is a helicopter frigate (FFH) built in the 1990s. Main armament is a Mk 110 57mm Bofors auto cannon, 8 RGM-84C/D Harpoon anti-ship missiles, 16 AIM-7M VLS Sea Sparrow missiles, Mk 15 Mod O Block 1B CIWS, four .50 Browning mg, two triple Mk 32 Mod 9 ASW torpedo tubes with Mk 46 Mod 5 ASW torpedoes. Helicopter carried is one CH-124 Sea King. Propulsion is CODOG: two GE LM2500 (23,747 shp) gas turbines for high speed and one SEMT Pielstick 11,780 bhp (max) diesel for economical cruising. Two shafts with controllable pitch props and SQS-505(V6) hull mounted sonar.
