Turkey allows girls as young as 10 to cover hair at schools

Turkey has lifted a ban on the Islamic-style headscarf in schools, allowing girls from the fifth grade and up to cover their hair in a further easing of generations-old restrictions on the public expression of faith.

The government, whose roots are in political Islam, has already lifted a ban on religious garb for university students and female civil servants, scrapping curbs stemming from the founding of Turkey's secular republic in 1923 on the ashes of Islamic Ottoman Empire.

"Our female students have yearned" for the end of the ban, Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said late on Monday after a cabinet meeting approved the changes.

"The change applies to middle and high schools, not to primary schools," Education Minister Nabi Avci told reporters on Tuesday in comments broadcast by CNN Turk. "Beginning with fifth grade, everyone can practice this."

Kemal Atatürk is rolling in his grave.

Restricting Muslim headwear (such as the fez and the headscarf) was one of the most difficult changes put into place when he stood up the Turkish Republic in the ashes of the Ottoman Empire.

Revoking that measure is yet another step by Sultan Erdogan to create another Ottoman dynasty and to reinstate the Caliphate.

I know it may not seem like much, but this is very significant (as pretty much anybody familiar with the history of Turkey would state)

exactly

and so it began in Egypt about 20 years ago as the veil emerged from the underclass and began to overtake and shroud the middle class and divide Egyptians by religion and class. The veil is a political statement. And fundamentally incompatible with modern society.

Kemalists are jerks. They are quite a defiant on a low level but it won’t bring them any comfort in a long run. Just look at how the Sultan has purged any competent seculars from his armed forces at the time. All non-Islamist non-buttlicking officers turned to be Greek, American, Israel or Russian spies sentenced to up to life in prison. Stalin himself must be proud. Too good Turkey has no enemies or maybe someone would jump in to liberate their Kurds? What about hundreds of Istanbul PD officers who were after a government corruption? Lucky ones are simply unemployed “foreign agents” who were looking to defame Dear Leader.

10 year olds weren’t “yearning” for this. It’s just like how Muslims will say a 9 year old “wants” to be married and start a family. It’s their dads pressuring them or outright forcing them to do it.

Let this serve as a warning. It’s impossible to be a “little” Islamic because Islam can not be moderated for long. Even almost 100 years of purging it and in less than a generation Erdogan’s has undone nearly all of it.

Functionally, this is Clinton’s fault. The ally we had for decades was left swinging, and when we needed them in 2001 they were no longer there. This is a smaller symptom of what we have been reaping since.

"Our female students have yearned" for the end of the ban"

And soon our female students will yearn not to be students at all.

By which government? Erdogan's Islamist government?

Stalin himself must be proud.

Like he must have been proud after the military prevented communist takeover in the 1980 coup?

Turkey has thrived and grown for almost 100 years thanks to Mustafa Kemal "Ataturk". Erdogan will take the country backward to the 7th century within a few years.

He is even proposing to convert the Haigha Sophia into a mosque.

Egocentric idiot.

if an expression of Islamic faith isn't prohibited, then the clerics will make it mandatory. If a 10 year old does not wear Islamic garb, then that will be deemed an indicator of apostasy on both the child and parents.

True, in fact he is using Islamists the way Obama is using lo-info voters and minorities.
And Kemalists are their Republicans who are sitting idle.

All that you posted is true & Erdogan is leading Turkish society into a Shariah-compliant state.

But you said “Kemalists are jerks”. I thought Mustafa Kemal, his vision for a secular Turkey, and his political descendants, were the good guys.

Are you saying today’s Kemalists haven’t made an effective reply to Erdogan’s creeping Islamization? Fair enough, but it appears that Erdogan has reached past the secularized urban Turks of Istanbul & western Turkey into the darker two-thirds of the country in Anatolia where Islamic fanaticism is on the rise.

I’ve even read that if Erdogan & his henchmen get their way, the Ataturk mausoleum will be closed to the public.

When I was teaching in Turkey there was a riot at another university over whether female students could wear head scarves when having their ID card pictures taken. The girls argued that "this is the way we look." The university said you're not supposed to wear a head scarf while on campus.

I arrived at my office that morning to find a police tank(!) sitting at the campus gate, and police in riot gear all over campus. Fortunately our students behaved and nothing happened.
